Nightmare.
Now it's happened to me.
Last night some of my inventory was stolen from a production cube. New York City, although the PA foolishly drove the truck to his house in New Brunswick, NJ apparently.
Watch out for these items. I'll post police contact info as I get it.

Harry that BLOWS - my heart goes out to 'ya buddy.

Forget the PA - the PM should have made sure the gear was in a bonded lot, or at the very least, a lot with 24 hour security.

This is NYC production 101.

I am hearing that there is production equipment related theft almost every week right now in NYC - I think it's time for a STING OPERATION ...

Sorry Harry!!

There has been a recent wave of thefts from cube trucks in NYC and it's believed to be the same culprits.

Mark, it would be great if the PM could ensure that the truck was in a bonded lot but PAing 101 is to park the truck at your house and turn in a $55 receipt for parking. Hard to keep track of those guys.

Yes, Emery, and this is in fact what seems to have happened.
Amazing that they would follow the PA all the way from Eighth Ave. to New Brunswick, NJ where the PA lives.
The dopes missed my Superspeeds though!
Mark, I agree with the idea of a sting.
Shooting now with a replacement HDX and Pro courtesy of Abel Cine; thanks Mitch et al.

Wouldn't have to follow them with the use of a GPS tracking device. Just plant the device on the vehicle, go home and lookup the location of the device on the computer, then wait until the wee hours to make the theft.

Perhaps productions need to keep an eye out for these little buggers on production trucks in the future.

Harry, so sorry to hear about this. You know we'll help you however we can.

Just don't let that PA near our stuff!

How much was all the gear, and do you have insurance?

It is REALLY REALY sad that that happens, an maybe even sadder that people can have the heart (or not have the heart) to do such a despicable thing!!!

I like the idea of a sting operation and a shoot first, ask questions later approach.

Harry, that really irritates me to hear this happened to you. I hope everything works out.

As bad as this sounds, never dismiss those around you. An inside job? Who knew and who knows? I hope this route is a dead end. I've been 90/10 lucky!

I say we need to keep an eye out for these things.

Why don't every one keep track on ebay, pawn shops, and craigslist.

I am sure they will try to sell them.

We can all keep an eye out for them.

Let catch these crooks.

Most of this is likely already headed to Bollywood.

sorry Harry I can only imagine your frustration.

at one time a group of us actually had a conversation with SONY about putting a celphone and GPS combo card in the frame of their HDCAM. in short when powered up you could dial the camera and have it tell you where it was. The card was merged with the CCD block so it would destroy the camera if you tried to remove it. They were not interested in the process. We also wanted to setup a monitoring service that would handle tracking down the camera quickly ADT was approached on this since they already had a network on line. I for one would pay 40 bucks a month to monitor my cameras wherabouts I bet your insurance provider would be willing to lower your rate somewhat if you had this as well

End of a long, bad day...
Thanks for the kind words, all. Seems like it will work out. I of course had a rental contract and insurance from the production company, as well as my own. I've already been in touch with ZGC for a replacement Pro-35. Tomorrow a call to Abel for a new HDX.
Don't know what will happen with the discontinued glass; the 12, 14, and 20-100.
Mitch, don't worry. They put a different PA in charge of running the camera gear to the production company's office for the night. ;)
The best thing we can do is keep an eye out for any fishy deals with gear. Maybe it is possible to catch these creeps. Although I agree with Finner that we'll never see that gear again (and Mark, the word on the street is indeed Brazil)
Cheers,
Harry

Hi Harry

Sorry if my post seemed harsh. I truely do feel bad for you and hope it works out alright. I just see production equipment theives being savy enough to know how unique film gear is and how risky it is to try and sell in North America.

For quite a few years now I have heard the majority of stolen film gear ends up in Bollywood. I had never heard brazil. Is this a new thing by chance? Why Brazil?
