  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Why are Kona/Decklink HDSDI not connected to the GPU?

There is a card in development which will debut at IBC that will turn this whole topic upside down - :devil:

hint ... NOT made by NVidia or ATI.

Ok, so June, July, August, IBC is in September... 3.5 months to go, and then will it be available immediatley ? I'm looking forward to it :-)

It's very hard. Writing effective drivers is some of the most specialized work in the software industry, and writing really good drivers is really hard and there are not many people that do it well.

While I do not know this for fact, my speculation is that Apple looks at it and thinks there really is not a good business model for it. The video I/O market for Apple is dominated by AJA. Apple's flagship ProApps products are tightly coupled with AJA hardware. FCP is not a GPU-based program. Color is, but is it worth dedicating the significant resources necessary for writing a good NVidia SDI driver to further enable Color? Because doing that would most certainly damage the relationship with AJA.

I am frustrated by Apple's lack of an NVidia SDI driver, as it is the #1 reason ASSIMILATE dismisses an OSX port. But I can't say I disagree with the business aspects behind it.

FXplug in FCP can be CPU or GPU for effects.

I'm not sure moving to core image would help at all, and again, core image is accessible through FXplug if you want to use it. And, of course, there are some effects you want to apply that are just not happy running on a GPU and where CPU will be better performing.

And if FCP were all GPU, is AJA going to put a GPU on their Kona Card so you can have direct, fast output?

thats how it is, right?
maybe the nexts years a lot of people will switch to premiere/ae/cineform/speedgrade/scratch....or something different.

crossplatform is imo not so smooth like it could be...but like you said...its about the money.
 
I think a combined GPU / AJA product would be sweet. It should be better RT for any GPU effect, but put one CPU effect in the mix, and bam, you'd back to slowville.

Is there a "quadro sdi card" and a "quadro without sdi card" driver? I don't think so. Maybe on osx, your system will not reconize the sdi output, but the dvi out should work. Hopefully....
Anyway the price of a quadro sdi (even the 4600) makes kind of irrelevant to buy an apple computer (the most affordable octocore out there) as it has only 4 pci express slot, one x16 that is for the graphic card and three x4 (you may plug your kona 3 card here), but no x8 for a decent raid card....

not true.

mac pro has two 16xPCI and two 4xPCI. You need one x16 for GPU, but you can use another for Raid Controller.
