OK - of course I am envious of all you lucky bastards that already own, or are about to own, a Red One. So here's a list for the rest of us, those who have to wait...

Why we are lucky that we have to wait for our Reds:
  1. Build 16 will be very stable and established
  2. Build 18 Beta?
  3. The Birger Mount will be out!
  4. "You've ordered a 8GB card - heck, we'll give you the 16gig for the same price."
  5. Easy integration with FCP in the box?
  6. New generation of Macs should be out
  7. We'll get the EVF with the camera
  8. Lots of 3rd party solutions, most of them actually shipping
  9. Hopefully some non-geeky backup solution is in place
  10. Maybe the RedStore is open, and we can pick up the cameras ourselves?
  11. Solid State Drives, yes baby.

(Note to Swat team: If you do get 3971 to me earlier, I can easily provide you with a much longer list of reasons why that would be good :) )

I have to comment on #4.... "8GB CF cards - who uses those anymore?
I think we heard that a year ago... If i made a bet back then I would have lost...
At the moment, I´m not expecting to see 16Gb "RED APPROVED" cards anytime soon, unfortunatly... It seem to be togher that we thought.

This reminds me of my "7 good reasons for waiting til November to hook up with Natalie Portman."

1. In November I can take Nat on a stroll through the park with all those glorious, warm, wonderful fall colors.
2. November is 1 month before Xmas, so Natalie and I will have a perfect amount of time to plan a romantic Christmas together.
3. Waiting until Nov gives me a chance to hook up with Keira Knightly at P Diddy's annual Halloween party, before I tie on the old "ball and chain"... Natalie.
4. By November Trojan will be out their new ultra-ultra-thin Magnums...
5. By November, Scarlet Johansen will almost certaintly be divorced, so this way, me, Nat and Scarlet can become a "spritual" menage a trois family.

To me, these are darn good reasons to hold off on dating Natalie for a few months.

LOL.

Good that you left Keira out of the menage a trois.

Cause I have my own plans for this fine young lady. :clown2:

Never knew the spirit of Ah Q is global - the world is indeed flat

That's a quite many 7 reasons (11) to wait, so I will give my 7 reasons why not to wait till November:

1. There is no substitute for Red
2. Life is too short

That works for me Tom, I'll be well and truly sick of her by then.

I'd recommend some cardio training for you in the mean time, Nat's a real firecracker!

i wouldn't be so sure about #4 or #7...

New Generation of Macs!? I am days away from plunking down $20K on an FCP editing suite...is there something I should know? Should I wait? I too don't expect to see the camera until november either so I can put off the Mac purchase. Do you know something the rest of us don't?

You already how it goes: if you buy now, 6 months later apple will make you feel like crap by coming out with a better, enhanced, faster system...but if you wait 6 months to purchase...then 6 months after that, apple will make you feel like crap anyway...would you like to postpone your misery or not?...lol

Well I'm new to the MAC and I always thought Apple was a bit slower coming out with the next big thing than they are in the PC world.

The thing I love about the camera is it seems fairly futureproof at least at that pricepoint. Sony and Panasonic will be like trying to turn the Titanic, it'll take awhile (I hope)

It would be nice though, to have a top of the line MacPro system for a year or so..or is that asking too much?

I was being sarcastic, of course, but what I'm really trying to tell you is not to look at with that kind of pessimism. I've been running my Pro Tools HD studio on a Powermac G4 (with an CPU upgrade from Sonnettech) I bought in 2002, and it's still kicking ass. So, hell yeah, a top of the line MacPro will be useful for 4-5 years, maybe even longer, depending on what you use it for after 5 years. If you need it now, buy it now. I'm a "right now" kinda guy, so I didn't wait and got me a MacPro 3.2 with FCS2, 2 hard drives, a raid-0 from Glyphtech. Now I'm just waiting on that matrox MXO2 to really feel like a pimp(relative to my needs, that is..)

Between now and November is a lifetime in terms of computer advancements. I remember purcashing a top-end editing PC in July of 06 when I got my HVX200... by November, a system 60% more powerful was already on the market. I would advise waiting until the very last week or month to get your editing suite. That's just a general rule.

I agree...Tom

Me too.

If you're planning on getting a Mac Pro anytime soon, I'd hold off just a bit longer. The next generation of Xeon processors will be coming out later this year with the new quickpath interconnect, which will replace the frontside bus and provide significant benefits. Also, they will be based on the Nehalem microarchitecture, which will also be a nice boost.

Well, the EVF currently ships in the 100's, so there is cause for cautious optimism. Talking of which, I do believe that there'll be more than 8gig on the CFs later this year.

Found another 7th good reason to be "glad" to wait: all the supporting software (Red Alert, etc.) will be ready for build 16, and out of Beta.
