  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Backup Red cameras wanted

So far I've got 9 responses from here and AnzRug list...over Oz and zilch in NZ.

I think the list should be something similiar to the AnzRug list with:

Name - City - Suburb - Email - Phone - Mobile - Reduser ID - Camera Due - Other

Comments.....?

If you all are happy with that...start sending me your details plus $50 (just joking) and I'll send the compiled list out to members who are on it.

Please keep in mind that it's important to tell potential stand-by owners as much as possible about the shoot & risks before the deal is done!
Anyway I hope we build up a rapport with one another.

Cheers,

Dave

Just sent out the first list everyone who said they'd like to participate.

More welcome.....!!!

One thing on insurance which I look into further...sent this out to my insurance broker....

Scenario:
Company A makes an contract with production Company B for hire of its camera.
Included in agreement is access to a standby camera in the event that Company A’s camera failed.
To support this, Company A makes sub-contract with Company B to have company B’s Red camera on standby in the event Company A’s camera broke. Company A would agree daily standby and callout rates.
How the insurance would work in this scenario?

Reply:
It sounds as though this is an issue for Company B to insure rather than Company A - It is Company B asset and therefore based on the information provided should be insured accordingly.

Thoughts.......

Hey Dave,

Great job again.

That sounds about right, we really need to be insuring ourselves as a gear rental company, rather than expecting our clients to show up with the insurance.

Anyone know how expensive this is, and can it be added to your owner-operator insurance without a big surcharge?

I'm not sure I think this is a good idea.

To start with you're actually telling that this camera can likely break?

Secondly as a service you should provide the back up if it breaks or a professional technician who can sort it out. If it can't be sorted out then there needs to be a production insurance.

This is a big problem because you don't see this kind of thing being offered on a big shoot. Production sometimes have a backup body rented, but that's only if they're shooting in locations where it'll be very difficult to get a new one if it breaks.

So IMO, if you rent out as 2nd body when Prod asks for it YES, but if it's to be a standard NO. I simply think it's a service offered by any rental house. If you rent equipment it should work and if it breaks it's the rental house responsibility to do everything they can to fix it (and if they cant its an production insurance thing - so if you only have one body then prod. need to be aware of that risk).

Not sure I agree with you here......

Basically I'm saying if my camera goes out on the premium shoot at the full rate I'll make them aware there is a backup camera for them. No dramas, no nervous admissions...no worries!!..it's just there..a 2nd camera....piece of mind. It'll make me sleep at night, it'll make me a better proposition and it wont kill my business to those around the dead camera.

Also it doesn't matter if I, someone else or actual MTBF's, tells them the camera is flakely or not....reality will prevail and if it breaks beyond onsite repair, I better have fast, assured access to a replacement.
The backup camera is just one tool in your backup arsenal.
Putting all this to one side, you're simply paying an insurance (or standby) fee instead of paying outright for a second camera which is gotta make yourself a more attractive proposition.
That's all you doing. Anyway production insurance or whatever...reality will kick you in the arse and when that happens you can have as many excuses, insurances as you like.....but just fix it!!

another thing, if I can provide a better service than a rental house, that's can't be bad. If it breaks I fix it!
I really don't care how's it's been done in the past and if it breaks neither does the client...doesn't matter what they paid for/agreed to...they just want it working asap....
Dave,

Just realized from reading your thread again.

That if you organize a backup plan instead. Have a network where if you camera breaks you can call someone up and rent it for $200 for the rest of the day, so you can finish your clients shoot.

Now that's a better idea. Then you're covering your ass and you're providing with the service that the client would expect.

All I'm saying is that you can't expect your client to pay for the extra body. No rental house does that, expect for if the client specifically asks for it before the shoot.

(they would have to wait the time it takes to get the second cam on set, but that would b like any shoot these days)

Dave,

Any "proper" rental house will provide with a second body if the first one breaks down, they would just not charge for it.

A second backup body on set is only rented by Production if they feel it's impossible to get one in time to the location they shoot in. That body you could charge for (maybe slightly more than $200).

But to set up a backup network for us guys alone is a good idea. I already have that kind of partnership with another redrental.

What I'm saying is instead of buying a second camera or other spares for that matter, whenever your camera goes out on a premium shoot, $200 of your charge rate goes to the person who is keeping their camera on standby for you whether it goes out or not. Say you're camera breaks. It doesn't matter at this stage whose fault it really is. what matters is you can get a replacement and those parts go out at the backup person's charge rate for those items

Ok....you've got a few options......

1. Not have a backup plan and hope you can get a spare by ringing round.
2. Have a camera on standby which (you've charged a premium for your quality/zero risk service) and get sent over as soon as your tech requests.
If he fixes it in the mean time great....you probably only need to pay a single day for your backup camera. If it's needed for the remainder of the shoot, the backup gear daily rate comes out of your daily rate!

now depending on the kit you hired the client you still maybe making some money whilst your camera's laying dead or getting repaired. But, what do you expect...the producer hasn't gone else where, you've saved your name (kind of) and sure you're camera failed but you've also been part of the recovery process and not simply blacklisted.

As I mentioned it revolves around risk.
People with business sense don't just go to the lowest bidder....well..umm, not all the time.
they're very risk adverse and you provide a solution, at a rate that is also.

Dave

ps: just read your second post...makes sense!!

David,

I do think your idea is very good and actually plausible idea (just be careful IMHO with charging for it, in the wrong way).

I think that an actual worldwide pool for rental would be good. I'm traveling all the time with my gear and I think there's a lot of you out there doing the same. I have relations, trusts that's been built up in Denmark, but not really anywhere else and I'm hardly in Denmark with mine. Everywhere I've been the RED community has so far been helpful (it's difficult not to have to order in different things with such a new camera as this). It's been great! Thanks Luis in Mexico City and Petros in Greece and all the rest, you know who u R! So to actually organize an local thing but also a worldwide group for this wouldn't be a bad thing.

So maybe you have the skills and know how hahahahahahahaha

Edit: I would gladly join in - my rental will eventually have 6 cameras with an armada of lenses and gear. It's based in Denmark, but who knows where some of them R .

Guys in a network like that very soon you will have to agree on the rental rate of the first body too.
I don't know how it is in Australia but in some countries it is illegal, though everybody is doing that in a way.

Doubt this.backup will only augment the varying services people will offer at different prices.

I'm sure we can come up with a whole range of initiatives if we wished to break the law!!
