Hi,

Here are a few frame grabs from some tests I did with my daughter Catherine.
We wanted to know how the Canon FD lenses would look with the RED.
We used the MuseElectronics Canon FD mount. Very nice mount.
We were also testing dynamic range of the camera in the field.
…so… she wore a bright white shirt.

I am pleased with the results.
Have a look by yourself.
Directly from REDCINE QuickTime Tiff, then exported from FCP in JPEG, there is NO sharpening applied, exept for the night scene.
The pictures have different post settings so it is normal you see different looks/contrast/color etc…
I don’t remember the settings, but I remember they were different from clip to clip in REDCINE.

We shot monitoring on LCD at 320 ASA Build 15.

I think the FD lenses look great! ..and they’re very affordable without sacrificing a micron of quality.

For this test, we used 2 lenses:

FD 55mm f1.2L
FD 80-200mm f4L

For outdoors, we used an old ND filter plus a circular polarizer.
The lenses were set between f5.6 and f8, and then I played with shutter speed to reach proper exposure. A few are not perfectly in focus, but it was my fault. (had no hood for the LCD!!!)

Thanks to Kevin Halverson for hosting the pictures.

Thanks for sharing these images Antoine!

yeah.. simple but tell us a lot about all the game..

Hey Graeme!

I am so happy whit my camera you wouldn't beleive it!

Cheers and THANKS!!!

Hi Antoine,

Thanks for sharing these images, they really are wonderful and a fairly definitive answer to the question of how an FD looks on a RED ONE.

How beautiful those frames look!

And very well exposed too. Man, so far, the few samples I've seen from Canon and Nikon still lenses have looked amazingly sharp, with amazing contrast and saturation, much more pleasing to the eye than any of the cine lenses.

Good job! Imagine how much better those images will look with build 16, which Jim has been showing some samples of on Recon and the noise management and color stability is amazing. Antoine, could you post a photo of your Canon mount and a lens on it to see what it looks like?

Hi Rudi,

I have not the camera with me now.

I will post a photo tomorrow afternoon.

thanks for your comments!

Hi Kevin,

Yep! No doubt in my mind.
FD lenses look wonderfull with the RED ONE.
Thanks for all the work on this superb FD mount!

Yes- due to a limited budget, I collected a highspeed FD prime set from 14mm all the way to 200mm, including the 50mm f1.2, I am getting them all geared and making sure the marks hit (and remarking them if necessary). I was amazed at the performance of the FD lenses both optically and mechanically in testing. I like the warm contrasty look they provide as well. Thanks for a rock solid mount!

Can't wait to get my hand on that mount, Kevin. But I need to get my hands on the camera first, don't I? Just a few more weeks... just a few more weeks. (*SIGH!*)

JDCineaste,

thanks!

Tico,

It's in Sherbrooke, 160km from Montreal

i am most likely going to be in the same situation. i am super interested in the fd option and would love to see more fd test stills and better yet, some footage.

where did you go to get the lenses geared?

thanks.
