Hello Everybody,

I'm Stelios, I'm an editor and director from Greece.
Next month I'll start the editing of a feature film shot with RED.
I'll edit using FCP 6.0.3 on an Intel Mac pro...

I'm not sure about the workflow. My information is based upon others experience with RED. In Greece its a pretty new stuff and thats the reason I would appreciate any informations from the Globe. The shooting of the film hasn't started yet, I found a couple of .R3d clips and I did a few tests.

I have also Questions such as :
Do I have to transcode the QT ref if the film shotting will be 16x9
in order to work properly with FCP and QT?
How can I check the XML from my test edit ? (REDCINE or what)

Thank you in advance
Best Regards to Everybody

If you shoot 16:9 everything wil need to be transcoded through Redcine for viewing/editing. Tell production they may want to consider shooting 2:1 if no greater support is provided by the time you shoot...

Your best bet is to transcode via log and transfer for offline and use Crimson to XML back to Redcine (download a trial and view the demo video at crimsonworkflow.com).

Most importantly test test test.

Thank you for your advice.
I'll start testing using internet footage as soon as possible

Thanks again

If you've got your camera rental near-by I'd ask them for some test footage instead of the internet stuff. They should be more than willing to provide whatever you need for testing your workflow. It would be much more reliable that what is on the net and there is a real confidence factor if you can work with footage from your rental house.

Is that true, 16:9 qt ref files cannot playback in fcp?
Does anyone know when that will be supported?

Thanks

... that is for 4k (but you DO want to shoot 4k...) AND you have audio issues as well...

Shhoting 4k 2:1 with 16:9 frameguides is currently the best option for "as high resolution as possible" 4k.

We don't do long-form projects with the Red camera, at least not so far, and for our commercials we've been successfully using 4K 16x9 Redcode 28 with no problems either in the field or in post. (Except for the dreaded down-conversion issue)

Why is 2:1, which robs you of your full widest angles, preferred?

Perhaps I've just been lucky!

Good shooting and best regards,

Leo

Because you can play it in something other than Redcine and edit it without rendering to another format.
