On Set HD Backup Recommendations

Very interesting and informative posts..maybe they should make this thread sticky? Thanks to all.

I wanted to add to Ernesto's CalDigit suggestion. There's also the S2VR that has eSATA connectivity. This enclosure has been bullet-proof for me. It's hardware RAID 0 or 1 -- obviously it makes the most sense to run it as RAID-1 (mirror). Hot-swap trays. My on-set procedure is to offload via a Macbook Pro with a LEXAR FW800 CF reader or FW800 connected RED Drive to the CalDigit unit. Running RAID-1, I get two HDD copies right there during the offload.

Caldigit is nice, but is it east to carry it around set in rough conditions and so on? It is quite big and weights something like 3.5 kilograms (7.5lb). And what about power? It's not really a mobile solution (correct me if I'm wrong).

I'm personally looking for something small, rugged and mobile (can be bus powered). I'd prefer having two or even three small drives for back-ups on set (they can't ALL fail until you get back from the set) - like the F2, LaCie Rugged Drive and/or Nexto - and start to worry about safer options once I transfer the footage back in a controlled situation.

The Maximus although i have not used it, is made by Newer Technologies which is a large OEM vendor that sells to many companies getting great reviews..........for their consumer products...(hint..hint)
...

Although I have worked as a IT pro in a past life, i would NEVER bring a
home-built storage solution to a professional set. Its just one more point of failure that can occur with me being responsible. Does this make sense???.....finger pointing .

you consider buying a case, and drives separate home-built? I have been doing this process for 7 years now, with no problems. I don't feel like paying someone $100-$300 more just to put the same drives in for me.

We just finished a 3 day job that averaged 350GB per day. It was a two camera shoot. We purchased (6), G-Tech RAID2 500GB drives. I purchased (3) Pelican 1520 cases along with TSA approved locks for shipping two of the drives each day to Plaster City (Hollywood) from Chicago for conversion purposes. In reality we only shipped one drive per day. We cloned the other as a safety. Since the online for this job was taking place in Chicago, we cloned one more for the Post house. No issues with the G-Tech drives and since they are mentioned on the RED.com site we thought it was the way to go. These drives offer 400/800 and USB2.0 interface.

I agree with pkeenan. What's wrong with the G-Tech drives? Especially as a mobile solution since the mini raids are bus powered.

I primarily use both OWC and G-Tech. Haven't had a problem with either.
