I'll be shooting 2k with RED soonish and am not sure whether I should use 16:9 or 2:1... I did some research but couldn't find a sufficient answer.

I hope someone can give me a general idea which scenarios would apply to the different aspect ratio and which I should choose for film-out.

Thanks in advance

You should try searching harder. There are plenty of posts concerning this.
At the moment, 16x9 is not supported by quicktime.
2:1 is quite nice for film out.

It has been my understanding that while shooting 2k both 16:9 and 2:1 are equally stable. Am I incorrect?

That's what I'm reading all along as well, no issues shooting 2k 16:9 and 2:1. It would be great if somebody could tell me when to use 16:9 and when 2:1 and which one is better for later film out. From my understanding 16:9 has more vertical pixel (1152) vs 2:1 (1024). So I would assume shooting 16:9 is better... please confirm.

I can not shoot 4k because I'll be on a remote location with limited storage.

Thanks

2K at 16:9 would be better for film out... Although I'm not a huge fan of how 2K looks. Too much compression artifacting and noise. (as of Build 15)

If you can't shoot 4K, please try to shoot 3K at least. Much better image and will hold up better in a film out. Personally, 2K is the only format where 16:9 is necessary. 3K and 4K are perfectly good for film out at 2:1.

Thanks Kenn!

cheers
