At some point I'm going to be doing professional work with RED footage and I want to have my workflow ready. Basically, I'd like to be able to finish out to DPX, but I'm still not sure how the whole thing works. Here's what I know I have to do so far:

1. Shoot.
2. Edit offline in FCP by converting the .R3D files into ProRes.
3. Export an XML from FCP to Crimson, then conform another XML for use with REDCINE.
4. Import the XML from Crimson into REDCINE and do a one light pass on the .R3Ds before exporting as DPX.

Now from this point on I'm lost. Maybe the easiest thing to do is to ask the questions that confuse me most.

1. What exactly is it that I'm looking to do with the one-light pass in REDCINE? Shouldn't all my colour correction be going on in Apple's Color?
2. Just how do I get the DPX timeline from REDCINE to Color?
3. Can Color even handle the 4k DPX workflow?
4. Can Motion/After Effects/Shake ingest and export DPX files?
5. Where does Gluetools fit into all of this?
6. Once I have the picture and audio finished, how do I make a single file out of the finished work? That is to say, I assume that there comes a point in the workflow where there is a single master DPX file containing all my audio and all the rendered video, but I don't know how to get it. You know, kind of like how in FCP you just send something out as a Quicktime movie.

I dunno, I suppose that there's a lot here that I'm still not getting. I'm going to download some more R3D files from RedRelay and try a few things, but in the meantime if you guys could help me out with this I'd really appreciate it.

Hi Alex.
I'm not exactly an expert on red yet so i'm not sure how to handle the one-light in redcine , but I think you'll have a hard time handling a 4k project in color.
For color correction on heavy projects i'd consider Iridas speedgrade or assimilate scratch (i know it's a lot more expensive than color)

As far as shake and AE goes, you'll be fine with the DPX's.

If you deliver in DPX, no problem, but if you need the audio to go with it you need to find another way, as dpx files are just still images.

hope that helps just a bit...

1.You could do White Balance and leave the rest to COLOR
2. You should export an EDL from FCP and import this to COLOR and point to your dpx files
3. Color can only handle 2k dpx files
4. AE/Shake etc, can handle dpx files...
5. With Gluetools you are able to load dpx files directly to FCP, from here you can export your timeline to After effects for example....
(joofa`s edl plugin or automatic duck
6. if you are looking for a filmout sound and picture are seperated....

Ahhhhm dont forget all the Colorspaces and LUTs involved when working dpx log files...

for further information you could talk to Evangelos...he is diving really deep in this kind of waters.

hope this helps.
