I've posted a R3D file to my server and I'd like someone at Red to process it down to SD via software.

The R3D file, in folder: A013_C049, can be found at ftp.ltpro.com; user name is r3d, password is: red5standby.

It's a pretty straightforward shot, a car, exterior, shot 4K 16x9 at 24 fps.

We've been unable to achieve decent results by any means other than hardware, with an HD deck or a Teranex.

I've no trouble making a really nice looking HD extraction via RedCine, but the SD down-conversions show much aliasing. We've tried down-converting with FCS and Compressor; no joy. We have tried Graeme's solution, but it just looks far too soft. Quite possibly we're making some error, but I don't know what it might be.

I greatly appreciate it if someone at Red can down-convert this file and post the result so we can load it into FCS and take a look. Also, I'd greatly appreciate a step by step description of the method used.

As I've written before, a clean SD is a major concern for those of us in the television commercial game.

Red guys, thank you in advance for your help!

Best regards,

Leo

I subscribe to that 100%.

RED should definitely be capable of producing some of the best looking SD footage ever achieved. We want to know how.

I had no problems going pro res >final cut> sd What software are you using???

We are using the latest versions of RedCine, FCS, Compressor.

We've tried outputting from RedCine in 1080p & 720p, using a variety of the filters and resolution settings, as well as outputting from RedCine in SD. Nothing is working well for us.

Perhaps your footage is such that it produces little aliasing.

Give a try with a high-contrast picture with lots of diagonal lines.

Thank you for your input.

Best regards,

Leo

SD - what´s that?

That means "standard definition, NTSC" probably on digi-beta.

Here are Graeme's instructions:

1) put the red footage in an HD timeline.
2) apply gaussian blur. Range 2 to 4 pixels
3) nest that HD sequence into a SD sequence
4) adjust amount of blur as necessary.

In image processing, from any camera, there's always a trade between resolution and aliasing.

5) also try a very small unsharp mask, strength 100, radius 2 on the nest in the SD timeline if you have to pre-blur too much to reduce the aliasing.

Best regards,

Leo

Leo,

The proxy files are corrupt, and the R3D file crashes REDCINE. Anyone else have this problem. Could be the download I suppose. I was going to give it a shot for you.

was he talking about proxies...?

After Effects is simply the best option period. I've done 4 sd extractions so far and have had perfect results. Finalcut's scaling algorithm is crap, and compressors is totally shit.

After Effects also does a splendid job adding 3:2 pulldown, and converting the working space to 601

Nooooooo!

Please don't try the proxies! Everyone should know that 16x9 4K proxies don't work!!!

Use ONLY the R3D file!

I've just deleted the proxy files from the folder.

Best to all,

Leo

I think this is about to drive me crazy...

The shot I posted on the ftp has no movement!!!

I'm now uploading the correct R3D file! A013_C049

Too many hours in the suite!

Sorry!!!

Leo

hahahah, I just finished downloading it, and went "nothings moving, can't see shit for aliasing!"

Sorry Leo, missed the mention of 16:9. So yeah, ignore the proxies comment. I'll try the new r3d file when it is posted.

Mike, After Effects is where I was heading too, after I experiment with Redcine results.

I agree with Mikey P... After Effects has one of the better scaling engines out there, so DEFINITELY give it a try. It should give you fine results in a hurry.
BUT...
If you have a little time and you want the absolute best image rescaling you can get, export the final sequence as frames into a folder, then create a resize macro from within photoshop (basically, you hit record, open an image, resize the image, save and close the image, then you hit stop. You will then apply this to the entire sequence folder).

It's not that hard, and Pshop's subpixel image rescaling alogrithm is pure gold.

Theoretically, all Adobe software should be using the same rescale code in all their products, but in the rare occasion that AE fails me , processing the same frames through Pshop applies that extra bit o' imaging magic to save the day.
SO. AE will save your butt 99% of the time, and is far faster and easier to manage, but Photoshop is still imaging's best friend.
Peace,
Skitch

Without this forum, they would find me in the studio hanging by a rather fashionable tie...

Thank you guys!
