oops forgot to say - ISO 250. I actually had it set to ISO 160 in camera, it was hard to tell outside in the sun for sure what we were looking at, but the colors popped better when bumped up to 250 in REDCINE. This was shot at 12:20 - essentially high noon, the sun was basically straight up. I don't have much for backlit shots today, but a few with more sunlight depending on our position. This shot above was facing SSE.

The best place to see concerts.

The best place to see concerts.

That looks like the path we took to sneak into Dead shows in the 70's.

Jeff my friend, you need to wake up earlier! By afternoon, the Colorado colors are washed out in this blistering heat. I'm sending over a triple espresso tomorrow morning.

Aren't your little ones jumping on your head by 6am? Feed them some Raisin Bran and get out there!

I shot some pretty good footy of the balloon rally in Erie this morning. Too tired to process any of it though, that's the problem with these 5:30am start times.

Here's a quick color pass, exagerated in saturation yes, but with nice recovery in the highlights, just to remind people what can be done with RAW images, and this was just an 8 bit JPEG...

Ain't that the truth... But I didn't do a color pass on the footage yet, still going through it -- as Rudi's saturation example shows, I think most of the color can be recovered. Most of what was shot today was just for testing purposes, seeing how the camera handled a few situations. BTW, the RED Carbon X rods are great. They lighten the load considerably, even compared to the Element Technica Ultra-Rods.

Heh. The late start was partially by design with the test intent. And because I played hockey late last night. After which, my team mates and I drown the sorrows of our 4 to 1 loss in some beer and I didn't get home until about 1:30 this morning. I almost loaded up last night so I could head to the balloon rally early today, but then I didn't... probably should've. But I was dragging bad enough today. :meh:

I'd love to get a RED into the basket of one of those balloons, though!

This is the closest to a back-lit shot we had today... Or at least of our outdoor footage, I'll start going through the indoor stuff tomorrow.

Glad to get your feedback on the rods...I've been giving those some consideration.

It's great having so many choices, except when you have to choose...there's too many choices!

That second shot, to my eyes, shows easily 9 stops of DR, even 10 - 10.5 with a little manipulation, that's good to see...

My intent with these shots wasn't to show DR capabilities. Essentially we were just goofing off with the camera yesterday and I wanted to see how it held up in scorching sun, both the image and the camera itself. Both handled excellent, IMO. The camera did get hot to the touch in the sun and we got a little paranoid and draped a white shirt over it. But it never overheated or reported any heat problems. Recorded to RED drive all day long, some hand-held -- and some of that bouncing along in a truck being held in the back seat. The camera and drive never skipped a beat.

But since the DR subject has come up, I'll say that I can squeeze 9-10 stops out of it under ideal conditions, by my own semi-scientific testing. I've done a couple chart tests where I can see the 11+ stops of latitude, but the noise can kill you on the low end. And like all digital sensors, it's hard to get smooth roll-offs on the high end rather than sharp clipping, but I'm not stating anything new there. Hopefully build 16 will help smooth these issues over a bit. The camera doesn't need more DR -- it needs to allow us to make better use of the DR it's capable of.

Jim stated today that they will be re-rating the camera's ISO and there will be less noise with build 16. Sounds promising.

Sorry Jeff couldn't resist, everytime work gets tedius, I open Photoshop and have a go at whatever is closest...
