I've download some footage (.r3d) from a forum to test my workflow, as I'm thinking of renting a REDOne soon for a short film. So far, I can see the footage in Redcine, but when I export as HD1080 with Avid codec (both dnxhd and aviddv) it puts out a file of correct length and size of pink&green mess. I'm running Vista 32bit, and have a ATI radeon HD2400 display adaptor.
Any thoughts gratefully appreciated!

I get that sometimes. Not sure what causes it. I have to start over by re-starting RedCine and then clearing the clips and loading them all over again. If you still get the pink/green mess, you may need to uninstall and then re-install RedCine. I've found that if I make a change to my system, like adding a new codec, I have to reinstall RedCine or I'll get the pink/green mess.

Thanks Sean for your response, I have tried this a number of times, reinstalling, rebooting, you name it, I simply cannot export anything other than pink and green mess. I've tried different aspect ratios, file formats, you name it.

I have the same issue on my PC, XP SP2 with a ATI Radeon X800.
I am able to play the footage successfully in RedCine, I can grade it, everything works fine as long as I don't try to render.
When I push the render button (to QT DV PAL, Image sequence, or anything else, whatever resolution I output), I get this same pink and green mess.

I think RC on PC is supposed to work better with Nvidia cards than ATI.
But I still can't understand why I am able to playback and grade the footage, but not render it...

Almost certainly your ATI card. Put in an Nvidia card and you should be fine. It's about the openGL drivers, and ATI's seem, as usual, to be a problem.

cheers,

This does sound like a graphics card issue, I have installed a NVIDIA 8600 GT as an economical solution on our 32bit XP test machine and I have success with all output formats. Also, Vista is not officially supported.

Resolution (sort of)

Ok, here's the drum: I de-installed my ATI card, and bought a Nvidia card. RedCine stopped outputting pink/green mess, all seems good.

But it output a freeze frame. So I went over to another thread on this site, and resolved that by rolling back Quicktime and so forth.

Now AVID stopped working. It would display freeze frames in the preview/program windows, but would cut to black when required to play in realtime. After a fruitless day of messing around, eventually returned the Nvidia card, reinstalled the ATI card, got AVID working again, binned RedCine. I've spent more time messing about with this than I will actually shooting the short, and digitising the 40 minutes of HDCAM rushes....

Next time maybe, thanks for all your suggestions guys though!
