  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

BBC shooting this month with the Red One

Amazing news:

"...
Starring Kenneth Branagh, the £6m co-production between Yellow Bird, Left Bank Pictures and Branagh's own production company through BBC Scotland is three weeks into a 66-day shoot in Scandinavia.

The speed of the shoot - and the quality of the image that is required for a primetime BBC drama - led to the team deciding to plump for the new 4k resolution Red One technology over 35mm film or any other digital cameras.

Director of photography Anthony Dod Mantle who, in conjunction with director Philip Martin, decided to use the new technology said: "The bottom line is the quality of the image. Given that I'm working against the clock with a small crew I can get away with less on set and achieve more with further manipulation of the image in post. I can get enough quality with my minimal lighting but magnify it more significantly because there is much more definition, resolution and luminance."

I'm sure that Jim is at Cannes Film Festival now (on sort of Armani's or Dennis Hopper's jacht :) ... ) because of Soderbergh's CHE (shot on RED).

MARCHE DU FILM at Cannes supposed to be the biggest film market show in the world.
Also it should be about strong pushing RED in a film production worldwide.

I think this is positive news, but BBC Scotland are (thankfully) a law unto themselves when it comes to making many tech and creative decisions and are usually ahead of the rest of the BBC.
I shot a tilte sequence for a soap for BBC scotland a few weeks ago and we thought about using a RED.

So the rest of BBC may or may not endorse RED for drama at the moment. t As far as I'm aware, they haven't gone public?

BBC and BBC Scotland shoot drama on a variety of cameras and formats (except 35mm) and the accountants are obsessed with tapeless workflow so RED should do well at the beeb.

Long time lurker here...

This looks like quite a high profile series from the BBC, could prove the tipping point for Red use within the organisation.

Oh, and Mike you are right, there has been no formal announcement as far as I can gather.
