I am working through the engineering of an HD production studio built on RED One in a 4 camera live switched configuration. HA, you say! It seems to me that this is currently possible if by HD I mean 1280 X 720. I can see a configuration that takes 720P out of HD-SDI or HDMI port and runs it into the house. I would prefer a 1080 signal out. Camera matching could be accomplished through cloning the settings from a master camera. I won't discuss the configuration of lens controls here but only note that there are some challenges there as well.
:help:
My questions:
1) Is there anyone out there using (or planning to use) RED in this configuration? If so, any insights would be greatly appreciated.
2) Is there any intention / potential for getting 1080 (live) out of the monitor port(s)?

My 1st post!
Thanks in advance,
Steve

Hi Steve,

At the moment this wont work. The preview out of the ports right now is not a 720p view of what is being recorded, but a 720p view of what you see on the lcd or viewfinder. Meaning that you see the entire image off the sensor, so the area around the recorded image as well. You also see other info, such as menus etc. Now this may all change in the next build, but no one outside of red knows for sure. As of right now it's not possible. The same for 1080, it's been said that further on down the road there will be an alternate build with a 1080 record option, but that is not a certainty and like they say, "Everything is subject to change".

Thanks Jeremy for shattering my dreams of an all-RED studio. The ability to use RED in a studio configuration as well as in the field EFP/ENG would allow me to cost justify the purchase while exponentially increasing our capability. Not that I expect to publish 4K but in a garbage in garbage out workflow its great to have highest quality acquisition. I am not at the point of actually specifying the camera systems yet. Maybe by this time next year there will be a RED solution.

Cheers,
Steve

I expect that the capability you're asking for will happen. There are a number of users who want that and a rather large broadcast market that would also embrace it. (I have wished for it myself at times.)

Hey Steve,

I think you will be able to do this in the future, but that's just my opinion. As of right now, today, it's not possible. I personally would not build something around it until I knew for sure that it was going to happen.

Steve, hope you can find a solution. Sorry to derail the thread, but I just logged in to tell you that I absolutely love St. Augustine. I grew up going there with my folks and it's hands down my favorite city in the U.S.

Best of luck -- Mike

Michael,
This is an interesting approach but it seems that I would still have to contend with the "on screen" display from the HD/SDI monitor port.

BTW, for anyone interested here is the link to the info. http://boxx.tv/

Thanks for rekindling the hope!

Steve

St. Augustine is still a small town and a piece of heaven.
