  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Ugrip or Zacuto Zgrips?

Ugrip..they were right next to our booth at NAB. We had it on our RED and it is rock solid. Amazing!

The nice thing about Zacuto's is the length of the arms, and the ease of removal/adjustment. It's solid, though not as sexy.

It's all a matter of what your style and needs are. I'd try to get your hands on both before making a decision.

Thank you all, so far it looks like it's gonna be Ugrip.

(Ugrip is made in Denmark. I'm Norwegian. As a general rule, all Norwegians love Denmark.)

Hmmm... Blue Handle system... Looks interesting, possibly another really nice option.

What shoulder mount options do people use? Just got my Ugrip handles and was wondering where to look for shoulder mount options.

I can vouch for Ugrip. The handles are comfortable and solid. And they were very helpful with my purchase.

As Lakeview said the nice thing about the Zacuto handles is the length of the arms, however I would warn against getting the Zacuto handheld system for the Red. It's awkward and generally insufficient (though their Z release system is great for on board LCD's and the like).

I'm am anxious to try out the Blue Handle system though. Given all the recommendations on this board.

I tried the Ugrip and Blue handles a while ago and I must say the Ugrips are really nice. But I liked the Blue handles better because you can change the hand grips position right away without using any tools.
The Ugrips need a tool for changing position every time and if you want the handles to turn upwards you have to change some of the parts to be able to turn the handles. We were changing camera position a lot and it was to time consuming to wait for changing the Ugrips every time. The Blue handles is easy because you release change position..tighten and 10 secs later you are ready for shooting.

Cheers

I love my Zacuto shoulder pad, it's quite comfortable. I like the grips as well. The arms extend further down, so my biceps and arms don't get as tired, and I can change grip position easily on each hand without dismounting the camera

I agree that the pad itself is comfortable, but don't you find that it's too small? I much prefer the shoulder mounts that wrap around your shoulder.

Also the way the pad is connected to the rods above it isn't at all sturdy. The loaded camera is just too heavy for it. But that's just my experience. I agree that it's nice to have the arms extend down, however the blue handle system does this as well and looks like a much better choice (of course it's more expensive...).

Bluehandles are too complicated to buy. I'm looking at their price list, and it's impossible to understand what parts I need and how much a rig will cost.

I think you have to call them (or e-mail them) and let them know what you're looking for so they can fit the package to your needs. They'll put a package together for you. Definitely not something you can just order off the internet.

Most parts are just options, all you really need is a Mod-01, Mod-02 or Mod-03 depending on what rod size you're using (19mm, studio 15mm or lightweight 15mm), and a pair of handles (Mod-06). Then you might want to add a set of offsets, either straight Mod-17 or Mod-18 (90mm or 140mm) ; or 30 degrees (slant away from camera, for a steadier grip) Mod-04 or Mod-05 (also 90mm and 140mm).

On the pictures of Darius Khondji with a Red and blue handles, it seems to me like he's got 90mm 30 degrees offsets.

Cheers,
Damien

I guess that the Red Arri 15mm base plate is 100mm offset spacing (studio mode) ?

thanks
