i need to know if i can take the hd-sdi out (it's clean when i have the monitor and viewfinder on) to a panasonic aj-hd1400 deck and record on 720/59.94 dvcpro hd format. will i be able to keep the 24p 2-3 pulldown look or will it look like 60i video? please advise

That should work fine ... it will keep the 24p 2-3 look as long as you tell the DVCPRO HD deck its 720p / 59.94 fps.

You won't have embedded timecode or audio, so set for internal timecode and feed any audio into the XLR inputs.

that you, i will try it this weekend and let you know

it can't look "really" like video, because the camera doesn't provide true 60 fps, as you mentioned already - it is just a pulldown insert.
don't forget while using the 720p signal that the scaling is more kinda preview quality, because of the nature of the programmable engine behind it.
it is actually pretty good, but not broadcast quality.

ok, not broadcast quality, really? i mean, isn't it at least better than dv, and they broadcast that all the time. do you mean i could not use this for something that will air on television? can you explain what you meant by that?

When all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail.
Some one really smart said that, not me.

Although you can scaled the RED image for broadcast, it is not currently a broadcast camera. I hope it will never be one.

Would you used an Indy car to race on go cart track?

How does the 720P footage captured from HD-SDI to Kona IO-HD into FCP look? You're capturing as AppleProRes HQ I'm assuming.

As of today May 8, 2008. Build 15, SDI out is for monitoring purposes only, Not recommended for commercial use yet.

There some other wild cards here.

50 vs 59.94

RG59 vs RG6, RG59 is very noisy, especially for long runs.

Yes, its a standard 1280 X 720 progressive signal. You can select 50.00 or 59.94 Hz refresh rate independently from the camera acquisition rate.

RED System/Monitor/Monitor Settings MENUS [DVI] vs VIDEO [720p] Yes this does play a role in your SDI signals. I find this out the hard way.

AJA vs BM, Your capture hardwares matters.

the idea is to use the 1400 deck to record onto dvcpro hd tapes at 720

Until we get more features turned on, I would shoot HVX200 with an adapter just because it's cheaper if your goal is 720p with DOF.

If you are going out to film like us, there is no other choice but RED.

In your case even an HV20 will do the job you are thinking about, or not thinking at all.

Please save your money and buy an HV20 from canon.

I'd just try it anyway, and then make up your own mind about the quality. After DVCPRO HD recording it'll be interesting to compare.

If you DO want a 60 fps progressive frame rate, set the camera to 3K 59.94 Project Frame Rate.

i have the 1400 already, so buying an HV20 would cost more. the point of all this is that i have a regular customer that is comfortable with the dvcpro hd tape process, spent all his money on a Mac editing system before intel based macs came out, and does not want to change. we did for him some product shots with the red and he was loving what he saw, but when he took the files home... let's just say he prefers to shoot with my Varicam. so i am just trying to find a happy medium that won't cost any more to get to it. we want the 24p feel, with the short depth of field of 35, and the familiar post of dvcpro hd (and i don't want to rent a pro35 for many reasons), plus i own the red, the varicam, and the 1400, so i don't want to have to get something else. what would then be the best practical way to combine these to achieve that?

that's good too, but not an option. they won't pay someone to do that process, so i have to give them at the end of the shoot a tape they can take with them and be somewhat happy with it. again, what i need here is the best way to record straight from the hd-sdi out to the 1400. what i am getting is that i should set the red to 59.9? and the deck also, record the audio straight to the deck (i am sure there will be a delay, but they can fix that easy enough) and i hope that if the red is shooting at 24p i will get the 24p 2-3 pulldown look. am i getting this? anything else i should watch out for?? is this going to look so bad that i should not even bother, or will it be at least as good or better than hdv?

Your SDI cables will play a factor.

Don't spare any money get the best shielded SDI cables.

Oh, use a single run cable don't connect them with bridge adapters.

Also watch your aspect settings into the deck. Set it manually if you have to.

System settings/Monitor Set to 720p [SDI] NOT Menus [DVI].
