Hi guys

I'm having big problems with redcine all the time.
It crashes randomly when ever I work with it.
I have a brand new intel 8 core mac with 8 GB of ram and the new nvidia 8800
video card. I reinstalled redcine, installed an older version, it still crashes all the time. I cant work like this, it's to unstable. I have to finish a job as soon as possible but redcine wont let me do it.

Do I have to downgrade to the older quicktime version?
I also reset the preferences or reset the library. It crashes and crashes.
I dont know what to do anymore.

Help
Tim

Yup, it does that - you need RedCine Reset (search these forums) and you need to make sure that before you render you save the project, exit RC, restart using RC Reset and then hit render without changing any settings within RC (except the view mode to whatever matches your output settings, as this will speed up the render and does not seem to harm the output).

Save your project often, as RC will hang when not rendering from time to time, even with reset. Always start RC via Reset, and be prepared for the odd render crash even with the above methodology.

If you're doing a big render, won't hurt to restart the system between exiting RC and restarting for the render, but then that's true of a lot of software, and is generally good practice, imo.

Don't worry, you will be fine - I was in full panic mode myself a few weeks ago, but this system works a treat, and my system is almost identical to yours, so should be fine for you too....

Thanks Dominic

I have the RC restart tool. I work like you said from the beginning but it still crashes to fast. I also save as much as possible.
my shots are 2:1. I want to render prores 422 full hd.
Would it be better to put out a 2K film or red 2K format and then scale it later in fcp or after effects?
would redcine run better like this?

when I say it crashes, I mean every 2 minutes. It's that bad.
my deadline is on friday. A little panic is in the air.

I suppose you have searched the forums and probably know this by now but anyway who knows?
what QT ver do you have?
1. make sure it is not the 7.4.1
2. delete the redcine folder from the library then restart and reinstall.
3. while loading clips be on show 1/4 resolution.

Ido

Hmmm...

I was outputting 4K, 3K and 2K, all shot 2:1 and fit to height to fill a 1080p frame, to BlackMagic 10-bit RGB codec. Maybe a PreRes issue, but I doubt it.

Weird you're having so many issues, as our systems are very similar. OK, gonna try to put together a comprehensive list of all my system particulars, so you can check what may be different...

System:
8x 2.8GHz Mac Pro,
Nvidia 8800GT video card,
12GB RAM,
BlackMagic Decklink HD Pro PCIe HD-SDI card.

Software:
OS: Leopard 10.5.2
QT: 7.4.5
RC: Build 90
FCP: 6.0.3
RC Reset v1.0

Not sure there's anything else that affects RC running (anyone?), but if there is I'll try to let you know what ver I'm on. Off to Madrid filming tonight though, so better be quick as won't be able to check then until Mon next week, which obviously ain't no good to you...

Sorry to not be of more help, and best of luck with it - I feel your pain, and it's not a nice place to be. If you don't get unstuck shortly, there may be an argument for trying to find someone else with a more stable system to transcode your rushes. I know that's not ideal and budgets don't like that kind of extra cost, but sometimes needs must and then you can work on getting your system stable for the next job. Just a thought.

Id like to know what kind of mojo you have in your system because RC crashes frequently for just about everyone I know. Doing the steps outlined above certainly reduce crashing significantly and allow you to get through moderately large size batches. But even using the RC reset method, we still get our fair share of crashes and hangups. It seems some clips are more problematic than others and some codecs are better than others. Rest assured Tim that others are feeling your pain.

Hey Emery,

I don't remember saying it never crashes!! As I said in my first post, it goes down moderately frequently, but using the tactics I listed and working slowly and methodically (and saving a lot!), we're managing to get through projects with it fine(ish). It certainly doesn't crash every two minutes, and will get through complete batches maybe 70-80% of the time, which whilst not great is usable. I'd LOVE a more stable version though, you betcha.

I don't think we've got any crazy mojo here, but I'm giving my mac a good-cpu biscuit anyway, just in case!...

Thanks for your inputs guys.
I read the forum every day for over a year now.
I know about all the possible quirks that RC is having.
I also know some guys in Switzerland that have very little problems with RC but they also cant help me out.
All those crashes are so random that you never know what it is. But there are defenitly to many to work professionaly with this app. I also bought crimson and this app works great. I made my xml list and imported all the clips from the fcp timeline into RC via crimson, no problem. Then I try to make my firstlight grading in RC so I can export it back to fcp for grading in color. The firstlight grading in RC is a total pain so far. RC crashes like hell. It also always crashes when I do a render test with only one file.
I want to make a prores HC 422 2K file.

Dont get me wrong I love the cam but RC is hell at the moment. We try to solve this problem for 3 days now. 3 RED owners tried to help but none of them could solve the problem.
This cant be true.

Any suggestion is highly appreciated.

Thanks
Tim

Hi Dominic

I have the same system as you have.
I just have 8 GB of ram but that can't be the problem:sarcasm:

So thanks for your time and infos.
I hustle on...

My new Mac Pro 2008 seem to crash more than my other systems, so I did a little test:
Using the following scene from RedRelay.net:
http://www.redrelay.net/owners/0378/ (Shibuya Crossing, Shibuya Tokyo)

MacPro 4 core 2006 8GB OSX Tiger QT 7.2 --> OK
MacPro 4 core 2006 8GB OSX Tiger QT 7.4.5 --> OK

MBP OSX Tiger QT 7.3.1 --> OK
MBP Windows XP QT 7.3.1 --> OK

MacPro 8 core 2008 4 GB OSX Leopard QT 7.3 --> Instant Crash
MacPro 8 core 2008 4 GB OSX Leopard QT 7.4.5 --> Instant Crash

So I have to keep using my old MacPro for testing R3D files.

Hope this helps a bit.

Ok guys it works. I got an older RC version from Brian Goff.
This one works. Kinda crazy, other friends have the same system as I do and it works.
The whole postworkflow thing is the real weak link within the RED system right now. The cam rocks, fcp editing rocks but the whole conforming thing sucks. Thanks to Ian Bloom we have crimson which is a nice tool.
It helped me a lot but still has some issues too.

I hope that the apple r3d file inport into color will work soon. This could be a big thing. We all need a solid postworkflow that is totaly stable asap.
It's not about me here, it's about producers and customers who want to take a shot with red. If to many systems dont work they will talk crap about RED and stay away. We still have to babysitt them, this kills the budget advantage over film. The postworkflow has to be rock solid very soon, so that everyone can easely understand how to work the files. It's much to complicated for none RED freaks.

Dont want to sound to harsh but I had some very hard days to make RC work the way it should and we are still not there. This should't be the case for pros. Imagine some normal guys who want to edit and finish their project, that dont hang around in the redforum for over a year every day...!?

I know you are on it Jim and the gang but from now it should be a matter of weeks and not month to make an easy workflow for the average joe.
Maybe build 16...

Cheers
Tim

Yeah it does crash a bit too often, but as you said, it works quite ok on several systems (not too many problemes here). What I found is that it pretty much always crashes as soon as I have the NR enabled. Turn it off again, everythink works just fine.

Anyway, I totally agree with you Tim, R3D integration into color will be a great thing, and it'll be a fine day when the whole post workflow is rock solid and easier to handle. Well, as soon as all the soccer moms run around with a scarlet, we'll be cutting away as if we were on regular dv :)

I've been having a lot of problems with RC always crashing when rendering out certain clips for no apparent reason. I figured out that if I switched the "Show" setting to "Full Res. High" before you hit the render button, it no longer crashes. Seems to be the opposite behavior of what I would normally expect, but this always works for me.

Also, forcing a lower quality debayer works to minimize the crashes, but this is obviously a less than ideal solution.

I also noticed that if I had Color.app or AE CS3 running in the BG, RC seems act much flakier. Could RC be fighting with those apps for access to the GPU?

I'm running a Jan2008 8-core Mac Pro (OSX 10.5.2, QT 7.3.1), with 16GB RAM and the ATI x1900 GPU.

Hi Tobias

I dont want to wait for the soccer mums come in to play. Scarlet is over a year away and to be more realistic I think it ist even 15 month away. Same thing with the epic.
We need this thing working like a charm asap.
Or RED could get hurt more than we like it.
I have no doubt that the RED team will solve all the postproblems but till when is the question.

Next week I have to run a post demo at a production house. I'm a little nervous about it. If RC crashes to many times I will loose this customer and they will shoot their billboards on film again. They also will think that RED sucks for a long time.
The hard part is, that I probably cant help it anyway. Either their mac pro configuration likes RC or it doesn't. My RC station at my office works pretty ok now, but It took me a few days. I dont have that much time with my customer....

Remember the cold problem of the cam and how fast RED solved the problem. That was quick but still a lot of producers ask me about this myth. Now imagine how long postworkflow problems will stick in the heads of late adaptors if people still talk about old problems that are solved for month now.

Again, it's not the cam. I love the beast and with build 16 it will rock even more.
It's all about postworkflow.

Tim

If you are having crashing problems, make sure to close other programs, especially ones that use the GPU heavily, like Motion. This may not cure your problems, but it should help at least.

I have the new Mac Pro 8 core, and it's been working almost flawlessly. I have the nVidia Quadro FX 5600. I'm running QuickTime 7.4.5.

Good luck with your deadline! I feel your pain . . . .

Hi there!
I have the same computer-system-qt version. Suffering of freeze clips and crashes for the last 4 days with build 90. Right now I am rendering smoothly with the oldest build 60. (Remember to reset Redcine first, trashing its library folder) No crashes, no freeze clips. But no idea about what will happen when quitting and starting RC again...

Thanks Dominic

I had the same problem yesterday, RC would just freeze up while rendering. Today it seems fine. What I did different is I am writing to a raid instead of to the internal system HD. I don't know if that makes a difference but I am getting better performance if i don't write to the drive that RC is running from. Is RC crashing while working in it, Color correction etc.? or does it crash only when you are rendering?
