SpeedGrade DI test on MacPro 8-core.

I've just got SpeedGrade DI evaluation to test a bit on my MacPro.

All in all SpeedGrade rocks on MacPro 8-core running Mac OS X Leopard.

I think for what I saw it is the fastest DPX/Cineon renderer available on a Mac.

In a near future when R3D file support become available in SpeedGrade workflow then it will be

a powerful application for Color Grading/Conform/Full set of film finishing tools for all REDUsers.

Sanjin,

How do you find the creative control.
What does the original look like?
Can you give us some variations?
How much was this image worked on?

Please share with us the steps you took in this process.

More later.

Also to mention that I'm working on evaluation license and that is still not R3D file support included.

This probably is up to RED and REDCODE SDK release.

So I am "limited" to work with DPX or QT files.

Sanjin gerat .but did you pay $45399 :w00t:

As I wrote above I am using a free evaluation of SpeedGrade DI.

About 8 months ago I evaluated SpeedGrade OnSet.

DI is what I would be interested in.

The full speedgrade version including 3D for RED (and Arri D20, Dalsa Origin, SI 2K, cineform, weisscam etc) is ~17.500 iirc, Speedgrade XR.
The 1080P version, Speedgrade HD, is 9.999€.
Speedgrade DI is recommended if you use a flimscanner as a northlight or arriscan.

Iridas doesnt limit the functionality of speedgrade. You pay only for resolution and codecs.

For fully uncompressed 4K (and 8K) playback to use one or several full 4K projections at once with Nvidia Quadros, one might add iridas venue system.

Sanjin, did you already test Apple Quicktime Prores with speedgrade running under OSX?

Sanjin,

Yes please do because the work here is very different from your previous studies, IMO to the better. More delicate and true to life and tasteful so I am curious about the control aspect from your experiences.

Hi macgregor,

I don't think a curve tool can make a big downside in color grading.
A lot of great da vinci & pogle colorist never use custom curve to achieve a beauty grade.

Sure, you can achieve the same result, but it takes you 354 revs on the wheels to achieve the same look that 3 clicks on a curve can give you.
Any modern software that doesn´t have curves? Scratch, Lustre, Nucoda, Baselight, Color, FCP, vegas, premiere, avid, photosop, all visualFX solutions ...

I understand your point macgregor.

For me, adjusting the Lift-Gamma-Gain wheels is faster than changing the RGBL curves, maybe because I always use a control panel rather than a mouse.

Well, I hope Iridas will add curves tool for the next version.

I don't know so much about the curves, pros and cons about to have it in application GUI but

I do know that SpeedGrade DI is a speed leader working with ProRes HQ or DPX/Cineon files on Mac OS X.

Just waiting to see what would be with R3D...

WHat's your monitoring system like in OSX ? DVI ? There's no SDI support yet for Nvidia driver

ON OSX you cannot go other than DVI. You can use a DVI to HDSDI converter. I haven't tested it yet but someone told me that DVI to HDSDI converters are prone to banding due to the 8 Bit DVI signal.

For any one who needs HDSDI monitoring PC is the way to go. Please note that the Nvidia HDSDI moldule is pretty expensive.

If you want to go this route you want also a Cinetal monitor. And if you went so far you won't stop investing in proper Tangent controls.

Bottom line: SpeedGrade / Scratch(bootcamp) on OSX is for low budget use only.

The Kona hdsdi output can't be used?

No. It't the concept of SpeedGrade and Scratch to use the power of the GPU. RT colour correction relies on fast GPUs. Iridas and Assimilate use Nvidia graphic cards. The 5600 fx screams and provides RT 2K with many grading layers. The Kona/Decklink HDSDI out is not connected to the GPU. If you want this Nvidia provides a HDSDI board. It's PC only due to Apples lack of interest in our industry (no Apple drivers).
