  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Capturing the SDI Out

I have already said that I have tried different cables. What information do you want? I have hooked 5 other source up to this split that all work perfectly fine which pretty much rules out bad cabling, computer, DA or BM multibrige. So my conclusion would be the camera. The fact that both REDs do the same has me very confused. I am trying to ascertain if anyone else is having this problem. I will give any information you need, just ask. I cant think of what information I have not given. Have you successfully capture a signal from the camera?

sorry, its hard to understand your posts.
If you've tried cables and a monitor then it must be time to call Red.

I have not had a problem with my Red.
 
Chris - where in OZ are you?
I'm currently in Melbourne with an AJA IOHD if you want to try that out.

Hey Greg, have you only hook your red up to monitors only or have you hooked it up to a capture device with successful capturing? If you have what did you capture with?

I am in South Melbourne. Thanks for the offer. I can get hold of most gear which is my next think to do. Our camera's aren't back till next week, so I am REDless this week. I thought I would post and find out who is capturing successfully before I went to obtain more gear. Have you had the IO hooked up to your red and captured successfully yet?

No worries Chris.

Waiting on my RED delivery - should be very soon. A mate of mine almost has his (waiting on customs clearance) so I'll be doing some tests with the RED and IOHD capture in a week or so. Hope you get the problems sorted sooner rather than later.
Anyway - good to know there are a couple of other REDs in Melbourne.

EDIT: might as well open this up. Our RED will be back in the office tomorrow, if either or both of you gentlemen would like to bring your gear down to test the output of #242 I'd be interested in the results.

I can confirm that I also have problems hooking up my BM Multibridge Pro
via SDI.

When I try my old AJA Xena HS there is no problem at all.

I've also had the same problem.

Using BM HD Pro pcie to attempt capture - no signal at all. Tried all 720 capture options and both 50/59 options in camera but no luck. The SDI signal is fine to all monitors etc but just will not capture.

Using Elements breakout box on all three connectors (which I believe are the same?).

Interestingly I managed to capture when I first got the camera (Build 13 and switched output to SDI instead of LCD). No joy since Build 15. Could it be that the signal out is any different and that it doesn't match any of the BM presets for capture?

Don't want to start rumours so maybe someone form Red can chip in.

I had the same experience. Testing on build 13 recording on SRW-1 after switching from LCD to SDI out. Perfectly running. Didn't have the chance to check on build 15 so far.

Yes, its a standard 1280 X 720 progressive signal. You can select 50.00 or 59.94 Hz refresh rate independently from the camera acquisition rate.

Haven't seen any issues as described here, but it would be good to collect a list of devices that seem to be on the edge with the camera signal (if that indeed is the issue here) Nothing changed between Build 13 and 15 as far as HD-SDI is concerned.

How does the 720P footage captured from HD-SDI to Kona IO-HD into FCP look? You're capturing as AppleProRes HQ I'm assuming.

Do you capture this way for playback purposes or instant offline editing? Have you played around with the footage at all? Grading or effects?

i have a slightly different angle on the same question. i have one big client that is very comfortable with the DVCpro HD workflow and does not want to change it, but they are excited about the short depth of field of the red. i own a Panasonic aj-hd1400 dvcpro hd deck, and, was wondering, if i took the hd-sdi output from the red into the deck, would i get a decent picture? as i understand, the on camera down-conversion is monitor grade only, and it may have a lot of artifacts, but would this be good enough for television? also, will i loose the 24p 2-3 pulldown look or is there a way to keep that? please advise.
 
to make sure i am being clear on the question, the idea is to use the 1400 deck to record onto dvcpro hd tapes at 720

Great idea Stuart. I am no expert in SDI signal My only conclusion at the moment and it could be completely wrong is that BM is fussier than I thought and that the RED SDI out is not a strong enough signal. This is the first device I have not been able to capture through the BM. Looks like the AJA cards don't need as strong a signal. I am going to have a chat to the guys at BM, they are only around the corner from me.

We didnt really care about quality...it was for quick playback on set, and simple editing to test vfx shots. The Red was shooting background plates and the foreground was 35mm, we did quick keys on set from the video tap on the 35mm camera...it was ugly, but served a purpose.
We trashed it all shortly after wrapping.
