Hi,

I've searched the forum but haven't found (so I guess it doesn't exist) a Redline for linux..

Is this available and if not, will it be?

Thanks, Ton

Windows and Linux versions of REDLINE have been mentioned. I'm guessing we'll see them along with Build 16 or shortly after. Jim mentioned that full details on PC workflow would come out in June, so maybe then...

...Of course, there's always the SDK coming at some point and we'll be able to write our own tools -- for those with the right knowledge or resources.

Yeah don't hold your breath on Linux. Sorry but let's try to stay focused here. Get it perfect in Mac and PC first- long way to go.

Well, 20 Quad-core linux boxes will crush any other alternative... In Price, throughput, and Flexibility. Also I dont think there are as many Windows Farms as there are Linux farms.

Especially since Redline already runs on BSD, under Mac os x it isnt very far at all from being compatible. I wouldn't be surprised at all if it runs just fine on certain flavors of open BSD.

Exactly, OSX comes pretty close too, or actually is, *nix/bsd .. so I guess it shouldn't be that hard to compile it on linux.. And yes, I would like to run it on our linux based renderfarm..

Nobody probably feels like releasing the Redline source? ;-)

My information is that a Linux version of REDline will be made available. However I'd imagine development has taken a backseat to Build 16 so timeframe is pretty up in the air.

Biggest issue, as I see it, with Linux version rather than Windows and OS X is lack of native Apple Quicktime library. So it might be that a Linux version is slightly more limited... Or not.

Linux version will come. It has been said by various RED team members, we just don't know when...

As for lack of QT support under Linux, I don't see this as a problem. In the context of a render farm, this doesn't really matter -- you typically won't (and often can't) have multiple systems rendering individual frames and dumping them into a single video file. You can pretty well bet that anyone running a render farm will be generating DPX, Cineon or TIFF images, just as most everyone does now for CG frame renders, or most any other render farm task... Or have each node on the farm generate the appropriate frame data in a temporary file, dumped to a server. Have another system, Windows or Mac, that collects these temp frame data files and assembles the desired QT or other video file from that.

Yeah the lack of QT support would just mean that either the Linux version excludes QT functions (creating References too?), or they use one of the two open-source QT implementations (which are a little lacking in some features and which they might have license concerns about) or somehow hardcode some of that stuff.

Personally DPX or TIF would be fine for me, and the metadata access is the other thing I'm particularly interested in.
