in final cut, everything is updated to latest os, apple and red software. some of my mags crash on every attempt to import, others load fine in the L&T window. any thoughts? (footage plays fine if opened independently in R.A. or redcine or QT)

ITS BETA, expect it to not work right. Its a bad decision to use it anyway.

Take your _H proxies and drop them into compressor and make the same thing Final Cut will give you through the L&T window, with less hassle...

Actually, in my tests, L&T was three times faster than Compressor and the quality was better. It is better to open your movies in QT and export them than to use Compressor. Exporting from QT and L&T was the same speed, but the L&T was better quality.

I had some problems with L&T crashing when I was trying to load close to 100 files from a Red drive. I got it to work, but I had to be gentle.

Are you working off your Red Drive or CF card? I had a problem with a Red Alert look file. Deleted it and that fixed that problem.

Well the problem with L&T is not that you have better quality.. because you dont... Crimson will not Online the files produced from L & T. Ultimately you are stuck with pro res then.

Plus the files from compressor are no different, they run from the same engine 'compressord'... Look at your Activity monitor and see what it says while your importing. So they cant be any faster, just because it takes longer for the batch monitor to update progress doesn't mean its slower... you can change that.

I dont care which is better quality because its an offline format ONLY... I would never hand a HDCAM tape over that was all imported through L & T, you can forget it.

thanks Dustin. yea, very interesting that I can repeat the crash.

I've already transferred files from red drive & cards to a gtech raid. I'm working from the gtech.

so you think it is the number of files? I'll have to test....

I just printed 8 HDCAM tapes at 1920x1080 8 bit 4:2:2 uncompressed, 20% better quality than Pro res

the F900 records at 3:1:1 1440x 1080 to HDCAM tapes, there is a major difference

x86box,

I am pretty sure you have 8bit 3:1:1 1440x1080 on those tapes. You sent the deck better quality, but HDCAM is only 8bit 3:1:1 1440x1080. I haven't done any serious tests, but I would bet that Prorez HQ is better quality that HDCAM. HDCAM SR is another story.

Pro Res is good for Offline, its not good enough for most deliveries. If you are finishing in Pro res, then you are losing half your quality.

Have you tried to Online any footage through crimson?

Also have you tried batch rendering from RedAlert / Redline? You can send multiple commands into the window and the transfers will pick up after each other, just like a batch window. So you can load shot by shot, One light CC then send to the RedLine batch render... Not to multiple computers... Only using the one you are working with,

Your losing quality by losing the ability to online through Crimson, Have you had good results Onlining the R3d file using L&T transferred files, and manipulating dpx files in Color? I have as long as I dont import them this way!!!

Pro res is not a delivery. Your stuck with Pro res when you import the files that way, so you do lose a whole lot of quality. You have to fully de-bayer your images, and ONline through Crimson and output with RedCine. A Pro res file is nothing compared to Manipulating the RAW file.

Believe my warning, I offer suggestions. You will only lose time and money by importing with L&T, until there is a better way to ONline the R3d ditch L&T.

I am sure Ian will soon fix the problem with Crimson and L&T.

Yes, a workflow that uses dpx files created from the r3d is better better than Prorez. It is also overkill for most work.

Outputting to HDCAM tape is more harmful to your quality than Prorez, but that is perfectly acceptable.

Its not acceptable at all, its not red footage.

It was DVCpro mixed with F900 and 35mm 1080 HDCAM SR. When I play back my tapes they are 4:2:2 1080 23.98, they were printed from uncompressed. That was their delivery specs. They passed QC.

Anything I print other than DV is from an uncompressed source, Pro res is the DV of the High Definition world. Yeah you can finish in it, but its compressed.
