  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Dropped Frames

Drop Frame Indicator

Drop Frame Indicator

given that there is a warning light in the viewfinder/lcd for dropped frames the question must be asked - under what circumstances did the RED team foresee dropped frames occurring and how frequently given that they have included a dropped frame warning light in such a prominent position?

Very infrequently. The purpose of that indicator is to tell you IF you dropped a frame, rather than how MANY frames you dropped.

So did that happen today then ?

EDIT:

I just want to say that I should have mentioned this to Red support first, before posting about it on this thread. My bad.

My apologies to Red, and to Stuart.

END EDIT.

I had the same problem. Well over 100 frames on many clips. CF seemed to help. Never had this problem in build 14, shooting in similar conditions.

sounds like bad drives..but who knows...glad I got some CF cards incase this happens to me...

I really REALLY don't like hard drives as a recording system for a camera..they fail and it's ugly when they do. ( I have to deal with that at the studio every year, even with our raid setups)

Are the drops being caused by bad sectors possibly on the drive? I had 5 dropped frames on a lock off with the drive 98% empty. After that take no more problems. build 15, 29.97 fps. Thinking it might have been bad sectors, and during the next format the sectors were mapped around?

After the dropped frames occured the first time we reformatted the drive but the dropped frames re-occurred at different points in the drive so im not sure if its a problem with a few bad sectors on the drive.

Just to keep you up to date on this the RED support team finally got back to the rental company (almost a week after the problem was reported) and have asked for the Hard drive to be returned for inspection. Hopefully they'll be able to figure out what the problem was.

Hi Stephen,

Did you just have the one Red Drive on your shoot? I wonder if the rental company you used has a spare Red Drive and if the dropped frame problem happens on that drive too. Personally I think a second Red Drive is essential on a shoot - if your main drive goes down your only option is recording to CF cards which isn't always convenient. We had the firewire 800 port on two separate Red Drives fail last week on a two camera shoot (one of the drives was brand new and both have now gone back to Red). The only way to back up on them was via Firewire 400 (laboriously slow especially if you're shooting lots of footage, which they were - almost 200 GB/day). Fortunately we had a further two Red Drives that were fine which made things a lot easier.

I'd definitely try & see if the dropped frame problem persists on another Red Drive and if it doesn't I'd have the first drive returned to Red (it sounds like it's a bit flaky. Red are pretty good about fixing/replacing faulty Red Drives).

3 days ago I was shooting 100fps 2k 16:9 with cf(build 15). when the card was about 70% full, it started dropping frames like crazy(some 250 in total)...
Had it with only one card even though the conditions were identical with all cards(one long take of water filling a bottle)

I've recently experienced dropped frames on 4K 2:1 shooting to CF cards (Build 15)... happened three times in two days... we've shot a lot of hours on the RED and this is our first ever dropped frame experience... anyone have any ideas why its happening?

thanks guys.
