  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

shooting 1080p or 720p on Scarlet?

Does anyone know if Scarlet will shoot in any other format besides RAW when it comes to shooting in 1080p or 720p.

The reason I ask is because my computer will surely not have the processing power to edit RAW footage, let alone 3K RAW footage.

Which is why the day I get the Scarlet I plan to shoot initially in 1080p or 720p and move up to 3K when I get a computer that can handle editing in 3K as easily as my PowerMac G5 can edit in 720 P today.

Your thoughts?

Didn't this question come up 20 times on this board already? Try checking out the FAQ. I think the answer is

a- Nobody knows because the camera is currently a block of machined aluminum.
b- No, it shoots only 3K. If you want 720p or 1080p you do a downconvert in post or you get another camera.
c- Who cares, it's only $3,000.
d- None of the above.
e- All of the above.

Guys, the specs clearly say it going to have an RGB mode as well - which would have to be resolved from the 3K-RAW by the inside gizmos. I could easily imagine the RGB being available at 2K, 1080P, 720P and maybe even 480P. Especially for compositing and VFX You will need RGB. Remember that in the end there is the Graeme's 78% RedVooDoo Magic while converting to RAW to any other useable format...

How about f) You put all the options and features from this forum into a hat and each customer can pull out certain number based on the price when placing order:

$ 3,000,- Scarlet as it is
$ 4,000,- Scarlet with one specific feature out of the hat
$ 5,000,- Scarlet with two specific features out of the hat
$ 50,000,- Scarlet with "free" upgrade to EPIC
$ 50,000,000,- You get to develop Your own...

I'll take Scarlet as it is, or with one specific thingy out of the hat.

But I think you'll need more than 50 mln. to develop your own.

Not really. In reality (I did stunt like this back in 2001/2002) I dare to say I could develop brand new camera for less then $10 million with my team. And if You end up buying the main components from 3rd parties - even less. The sensor would have to be 3rd party in any case, but its the magic You do with the data coming from it that makes the difference...

Unless it is a typo (which I doubt) they could have always referred to either an "upgraded" RED ONE, or the next build behind the corner. There is no reason why RED ONE could not record RGB with tweaks to its system and/or minor HW upgrade...

But good point Gunleik...

I just seam to remember this being discussed with someone from Red team and they confirmed it is going to have RGB recording. Or maybe I was just dreaming that...

We desperately need to find a good fortune teller to take us ahead at least 8 months from now and tell us all about Scarlet. Otherwise some people may end up in the asylum for a while. :devil: :w00t:

We could then all file Class-Action Law Suit and demand RED to give each of us for free one Scarlet for the (mental) damages caused by release of such a teasing information. The ones who lost all their hair will receive free Red One and the ones who also managed to bite all their nails off to the extend that they have no fingers will receive free EPIC. Those who ended up killing themselves will receive SONY PD-150...
