Workflow test 05

Some new, some old, but with an odd tweak....

I've been testing different workflows (and codecs) and what I see, when I assemble a "mixed" timeline in FCP, the non prores files get a heavy gamma-shift upon export, the prores files stays ok.

This is not primarely a test of how to get the most noiseless images, even though there are some pretty noiseless shots here. More like:
Different stuff to do with available light @ night.

I have 2 more tests I will have to try to finish tonight.

Then I go to shoot most everyday the next 2 weeks, so I cannot do too much requests.

Cheers!

Very clean, especially for the amount of available light. How fast were your lenses? In your opinion, are fast lenses the key, or is more about balanced exposure and colour temp?

Great work, gives me hope!

Thanks a lot!

All of this is shot with wide open superspeeds, was basically no light there...

The test was basically to collect what I got and try to work with it...

Thanks again

All my tests can be found here:

I didn't manage to finish the key thing, a slomo-bonanza, chopper and snow, but now I'll have to work (gig starts in three hours...)

Cheers!

Damn thats sweet. My next short is in a low light area where I may need to use available light and from those shots the RED would kick ass for it.

Gunleik, This one seem to share couple clips with your previous file titled oslo-night, but this time with less noise. What's the difference in between the two? Why the same clips have this time less noise?

Thanks guys.

As said and stated, these are workflow tests... I basically throw the cam into odd spots and I try to learn how to deal with it - a lot of it is post - studies.

As was brought up, I didn't have proper monitoring when I posted the first version, that was the main hurdle. I didn't see it, so I couldn't deal with it.

The major thing, though (believe it or not, because the development is from the same DPX frames - I didn't re-export those) is the move from the KONA wrapper to gluetools. I don't know what he does, but it feels like magic.

Then ( as stated in the original post in this thread) I noticed an other ugly side to the QT/FCP gamma issue. I've been consentrating on DPX, but also doing some prores (and other codecs) to familiarize myself with different workflows. It seems DPXs are treated unfairly bad in FCP (thus being forced into the dark) whilst prores is not. So some of the clips are actually a lot darker (and thus: less noisy) than what was originally intended :) They're still a lot less noisy than the original Night Clip, though...

Thirdly, I have had a couple of weeks to familiarize myself with RED RAW... That helps. That doesn't make us lovers yet, but we're courting...

Sorta...

You may need to change the Still Image Gamma default in FCP - It may be incorrectly applying a transform to your Gluetools DPX Quicktime; I know it treats the Animation codec in a similar (incorrect) manner.

Interesting footage - some shots are quiet cool, such as the one in front of the Kebab joint - did you apply any cc on that particular one?

Keep up with the good job and make us dream!

All shots are processed in slightly different ways. These are workflow tests, remember. No de-noising has been applied as such. Mild sharpening has been applied in color to some of the shots.

... and the dogs are not mine...

... and the dogs are not mine...

I was wondering were mine was the other day, i guess you borrowed him (they look indentical)

Seriously though, the clip of the dogs looks a bit odd, crushed blacks etc. Could you elaborate on the conditions/problems you had, and speeds you shot them. And which lens? was it hard to focus on the fly?

Cheers

Michael

The main problem is a LOMO lens...

But I wondered when someone would comment...

I'm contemplating to re-do the three first tests, actually. I did them with my RED just unwrapped.

The beauty of RAW, is that's not a big issue, though.

The focus was handheld to 35mm for the first time in my life :)
So I guess it can be a bit off.
And the web-compression was not very kind to the hairs of the dogs. I may look into it, I just have so much "real" work to do, too...

Thanks

Didnt know what a lomo was, now i do. :)

Yeah I remember going from SD to HD 2 years back and had to relearn focussing, guess i got to do it again. I think its good though, makes you a better focus puller. Ill mostly be racking my own focus.
Ill show you my first red focusing for a laugh (when that day finally comes)

Some stunning fjords though in your other reels.
