I just experimented with the new Red "Log and Transfer" in FCP.

It's transcoding to 1/2 resolution ProRes.

Anyone know if Red will be upgrading this feature to full resolution? It might be tough to work with 4K this way, but for those of us working with 2K footage, working with 1/2 size proxies is less than HD.

eventually 1 to 1 input will happen but some things need to happen first. For example FCP needs to support 4K. As for 2k the best you can get using this method is 1K

It is a function of the RED Quicktime codec, not the L&T window and yes,
it will be updated soon.

what sense does it make to do that, the whole concept behind red is RAW, and with just importing propress are we not loosing all advantages? and if that is for offline, why proxies are not good enough?

hope this is not stupid quesiton :*)

importing is a bit faster than rendering in redcine. For some applications speed will be more important than best possible image quality. If using proxies the qt proxy method is very fast.

so, then if it is a matter of time, why not use proxy, it is fastest. or am i missing something? :*)

ProRes is just easier to edit/work with on most systems - and rendering time aside, doing an offline/online with it is just like using the proxies.

I just converted everything from a 3 day shoot to ProRes using a compressor droplet, worked great - did it all in the background, took about 20 hours.
