People keep bringing up the idea of Scarlet in Best Buy and similar establishments. Is this even a realistic possibility?

I figure one reason RED can make their cameras so affordable, is that they're operating in a direct-from-RED price scheme. This cuts out the middle-man reseller that would need to derive their own profits from camera sales. I don't see how RED could ship to resellers without increasing their prices.

Furthermore, I haven't seen evidence of RED establishing a "certified for RED" system such that accessories can be provided by second party companies.

Thoughts?

Red...don't make it a retail thing PLEASE!

We love the way you have done business up til now, and I would appreciate it if you could keep it that way.

To Spiff: I don't really think they would put them in Best Buys, as they don't have the cameras cranking out in large numbers yet.

Especially the Red Ones, they are already busy enough.

I don't really care to see Scarlet in retail stores either, though I am happy to support local businesses.

I don't think retail for RED ONEs is viable, since the cost of inventory would be prohibitive. Even Scarlet would be high price for a retail outlet, but not out of line with other electronics and home appliances.

The expectation however is that the volume of Scarlet shipments will vastly exceed that of the RED ONE, and I'm curious as to whether RED plans to swell to meet that demand.

Sounds like a stupid idea. Red doesn't strike me as being stupid.

I'd expect to see the Scarlet in Abel CineTech, or Platts, or Roscor, or B&H. But Best Buy? Circuit City? No chance.

Look, the one thing we actually know about the Scarlet is that they've stuck with "Professional" from day one. Pocket Professional Digital Cinema. Best Buy doesn't sell any professional products from any manufacturer, they only sell from the consumer divisions. B&H sells professional products. Abel sells professional products. Platts sells professional products. If the Scarlet goes to resellers, expect it to go to professional resellers, not consumer outlets.

It's a fixed lens, which makes it prosumer, and sometimes places like Best Buy, and especially Frys, will carry prosumer cameras in the $3k-$5k range.

I don`t care as long as things don`t get worse for buyers.
Anyways it`ll be Jim Jannard`s decision, not the customers, just like he stated it.

Now You are having a bad attitude! They (RED) may refuse You their service... :innocent:

No, seriously, the word "prosumer" is a big no-no and Jim was heavily defending that it is not "prosumer". And having a fixed lens is not necessarily "prosumer" - that will greatly depend on the quality of the lens itself. I believe RED will pull some magic and the lens will have a full control of the DOF. After all it maintains the f2.8 through out the whole zoom range. I don't think the footage will look anything like video. And if that is the case - word "prosumer" is little harsh...

No hard feelings...

According to what Big Jon said in http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?t=12358, there will be no reservation system for Scarlet. "The day it is introduced is the day you can buy yours" - could only mean that Scarlet will be mass-produced in some decent numbers (we could see 10000 units or more in the first wave) and I agree with Barry that RED will end up selling it via all the "PRO" chains, such as B&H, Abel CineTech, etc...

I seriously doubt you will find Scarlet anywhere other than RED's online store or their soon to be much touted retail store in Lake Forest. I wouldn't be surprised if it were available in late 2009 at an Apple store, however.

Why would they sell it at retailers? The only thing that is good for is to reduce your margins. With this camera for this price, I highly doubt we will see it anywhere else then at RED's online store. And especially not at Apple's store.

YEAH APPLE! I love that place! Cheers for Apple and Red!!!

I tend to agree with Jeff about the Apple Store idea (both retail & online). What worries me the most is not the chain of retail, but the logistics of repairs and support. Using Apple for both distribution & service/repairs will actually make a lot of sense. I know Apple customers in USA are always whining about how bad Apple's customer service is, but I have worked (and lived) all over the globe and wherever Apple was present - the customer service was excellent...

This would make perfect sense for all of us outside of USA, as sending gear to RED for repair will involve major headache with customs in both directions...

PS: But I still think it will be available via B&H and other "pro" stores alike. It just makes perfect sense, as many of us have a corporate accounts with them and we buy majority of our pro-gear through them...

I'd assume Red would sell it through their own online store at first but if Scarlet sales explode, I could see them exploring the B&H route as well. I don't see Best Buy in their future... unless RedRay takes off and you put a RedRay player in every home. I can hear the "but there aren't 4K displays for RedRay to show on" argument but don't forget that it's scalable from 720 on up. They'd have to get it well below $1000 for this to have a remote chance of playing out though and it's pretty far fetched.

Hmmm.... back to topic:
Do you think Red would sell anything but the body for Scarlet at a B&H? There are so many accessories for this thing that it could get complicated really fast.

Why would it get complicated? If anything I don't think RED will be able to handle the expected volumes of sale without farming it out. Places like B&H are well designed to handle this efficiently...

RED better focuses on R&D, design and manufacture...

I mean it could get complicated for B&H. Do you think they could answer the questions of what accessories will work for your particular Scarlet configuration, and if you buy this handle, do you need that plate, or mount, or whatever.
If Scarlet takes off, you'll have a lot of people buying this stuff who have no clue what they need. The accessories could get confusing for them. I sure as hell don't see Best Buy selling cheese plates and top handle mounts. I would however pay good money to watch a Best Buy employee try and explain to Joe Schmo the difference between Scarlet and the FX1 sitting beside it. That would be some great comedy right there.

**EDIT**
You know, the more I think about it, I don't think there is a chance in hell you see a Scarlet at Best Buy. Come on now, who are we kidding? B&H maybe. Best Buy, no.

Since when does a fixed lens establish something as "prosumer"? And when does an interchangeable lens mark something as "professional"?

Scarlet is a Pocket Professional Digital Cinema camera. Putting it in Best Buy or Frys would make no sense. Doing so would be a mistake. This is a product aimed at professionals, not soccer moms. If it's going to be sold by resellers, it'll be sold by professional resellers.

The Apple store? I hope not. That's a place that was designed to sell iPods and other Apple products, and has nothing to offer a digital cinema professional. I'd much rather walk in to Abel or Band Pro or EVS or Lerro or Roscor or CineEquipt to buy a Scarlet, than try to deal with some end-consumer/retail clerk. A professional cine equipment reseller is going to have every accessory, every mattebox and filter, every bag and mixer and cable and everything else you're going to want. The Apple Store isn't going to have anything like that, and neither's Best Buy.

Let's put it this way: who'd you rather buy a Scarlet from, who'd you rather consult with as you're making the decision: Mitch Gross, or a 16-year-old Apple Store clerk? More importantly, who do you think Jim would rather have representing his product and Red's brand: a veteran cinematographer and equipment master like Mitch, or some kid at Best Buy?

Ain't gonna happen. I predict we won't be seeing Scarlet at Best Buy or the Apple store. Maybe we'll see RedRay there, but not Scarlet.
