I realize it's way too early for this kind of speculation...but...does anyone share in my musings that a whole industry may spring up to offer camera conversions on Scarlet? I wonder how difficult it would be to retool the body, remove the fixed lens and add the PL mount that Jim has so vehemently said will not be included - no matter how many users want it.

I realize DOF adapters are out there, yet they carry with them a list of constraints and detriments. If at all possible, I would like to affix a wide complement of lens choices directly to the body.

Please do not take this as a knock against Scarlet. I'm already sold, but it really would be nice to have an alternative to the fixed lens system.

Lets start putting threads where they belong :)

I think a lot of people are still unclear as to Scarlet's purpose.

Anybody who has the need for a PL mount lens... 35mm DOF, or any lens they may have lying around.. please refer to page ONE in the manual. Scarlet is for people who do not afford such luxuries... not that they can't. It is about removing the limits of an interchangeable lens system... the added bulk, crew costs, maintenance etc involved with the "complicated systems." Removing the limits of image quality. Removing the limits of size and manageability.

If you need 35mm DOF... Red ONE is for you. If you need to use lens "x" that you have... Red One may be for you. If you want to make a film, tv or media production with as few boundaries as possible, and as simply as possible, without sacrificing quality. Scarlet could be for you.

I'm sick of people looking the gift-horse straight in the mouth and regurgitating. Scarlet is more than anyone could have realistically hoped for. and for $3k... you better stop complaining before they take it all back.

To answer the original question: anything is possible. is it worth it? We will see.

PL mount will simply not work with 2/3" sensor.
So unless "these" companies are about to change the sensor and all related electronics as well (I can see RED's lawyers making reservations for Bugatti Veyron  ) I don't see how...

And if they have somehow managed that - Your wide angle lenses will be "for free" converted to extreme telephoto and You could use Your current telephoto to help NASA searching for life in the universe... :innocent:

Mind You - You don't wanna see the quality of the images...

No - seriously - it can't be done...

Hahaha. Yeah, sorry about that Jarred...

Nathan, I COMPLETELY agree with you. Scarlet is certainly more than anyone could have hoped for. I wasn't/am not complaining. I'll be fighting with you guys to be the first in line to get my hands on one. Simply wondering how to eke out a little more "value." That's all. People perform camera conversions/augmentations in other arenas, so I thought why not here?

Forgot about the CMOS. Yeah, I guess a PL mount wouldn't work out too well on it's own. Anamorphic squeeze anyone? Bueller. Bueller.

Hi Peter,

Why do you state that a PL lens mount cannot work with a 2/3" sensor?
It's just a lens mount. The sensor could care less what you put in front of it be it a "C" mount or an "IMAX" mount.

cheers,

Peter is referring to the size of image coming through the PL mount. A PL mount means you are putting 35mm glass on the camera, and that (alone) won't work with the smaller sensor size. There might be a way to "squeeze" the image onto the film plane/sensor, but - there I go slaughtering gift horses again.

That's not true. S/!6mm format lenses and cameras are availble in PL mount as well as other lens oddities.

A quick edit here. Those distagons are in S/B mount but can be used with a PL adapter and can be put into permanet PL mount.

But in a same way when I put my Canon L glass onto XL2 You get 6x factor for focal length (I.E. a 50mm prime will become 300 telephoto...) there will be a factor changing Your focal length. As a side-effect you will end up pushing the quality of your glass by looking only through its central portion...

Doing the opposite will result in vignetting and exposure that will not cover the whole sensor...

THEREFORE lens / lens mount / sensor combination has to be well balanced.

Sure You can put 1.2 l Toyota engine inside a Bugatti Veron, but try to sell the car to a customer...

Thanks for clearing it up for me...

BTW: Your other comment refers to what 35mm DOF adapter do.

You're right Chuck, I should have written, "implies" you're using 35mm glass, or attempting to. That is what I was referring to in my original post - trying to figure out a way to put 35mm cine lenses onto Scarlet. However, given the size of the sensor, it wouldn't work without some additional image manipulation measures.

Right, but I was trying to bar against the light loss that happens when filtering through the DOF adapter. Sort of an alternative to the rotating ground glass filter systems currently on the market.

Movietube markets a translucent, relatively high-efficiency static DOF adapter.

Now we're getting somewhere. That's sweet, and I didn't know they offered such a product. Thanks Tzedekh.

Tzedekh,

I was familiar with the Movietube line of products afterall, but wasn't aware they didn't use the rotating glass element. I thought you meant they had a special adapter for this purpose, outside of the LT and ST versions. Thanks again for making me aware.

Now I wonder how long it'll take one of the manufacturers to start support for Scarlet? It'd be nice if development could coexist with the RED team now, so when Scarlet does hit the market, there will already be solutions and products in place.

Hi,

You are incorrect, a 50mm lens is always a 50mm lens. However a 50mm lens will have a smaller angle of view on a smaller sensor. A smaller sensor is the same as a physical crop, nothing more.

Your biggest problem of an interchangeable lens on Scarlet is finding high quality wide lenses, there are not many 6mm photo lenses!
