I hope some people can think before they post.... and actually attempt to post something productive, rather than just off-topic rants and insults of other members that do nothing but add to unwanted noise on this forum.

My opinion is a fixed lens is more important for the long run.

Those that know me are very aware of my stance on removable optics. I hate the fixed lens systems with a F*$K*%# passion. ( Anybody got a hacksaw ) that's how I feel about it. But; and there is always room for a but, and this is one of them. Red must succeed with this new product, and it won't happen in sales of low quantities. Great things will come from this decision to go with a fixed lens. First Red takes their thick treaded boots and gently plasters it in the faces of those other camera companies that have trickled there low rez under performing gear with high ticketed prices for way to long in my opinion. I'll personally enjoy watching this one. Secondly Red gains a much larger user base, and in return takes a much bigger bite of the pie that benefits everyone. Which in my opinion, they wholeheartedly deserve. Third and most importantly as RED succeeds they will continue to changed the current path of technology in the market, forcing the others to update their antiquated business models to compete or stand aside and loose sales in the marketplace. I like the honesty that RED shows. Clearly they can make a removable lens Scarlet; however they need to make the more responsible business decision for the long run of RED. I'll bet after this is all said and done, and Scarlet is a wide spread successful product, you will possibly see a Scarlet like removable lens camera one day just like the other companies have DSLR and fixed lens camera systems in the same market price range. However, at this stage, Red is doing the right thing. This is REDS way of telling the soccer moms out there, " it's ok to touch it, it's doesn't bite"; and us so called pro's " your getting one serious piece of gear that kicks a*$ and you wont regret producing content with it one bit.

Just my two worthless cents on this matter..

Sorry Sanjin (and everyone else that missed the point). Just buy a RED ONE and you have every option you are all asking for.

Here is the missing point... for us to sell this package at this price, we have to sell A LOT of them. That means it has to be able to be used by many. Like it or not, that means a version that is fully auto. Interchangeable lenses means a different product that will sell in limited quantities... which means a higher price. Much higher.

This is a camera that can be sold in large quantities and deliver Pro performance at the same time.

ahh, humanity... some rude, some elegant... some clamoring, some thanking... but so many demanding and greedy for more for next nothing... when the more is right there for a more than generous price... mindboggling... no wonder Jim needs a hiatus...

thanks Jim for standing it so graciously for so long...

You guys kill me, Jim is the Red Light and you are the Moths....i bet he's not sure if he is the "Pimp" or the "Hooker" right now.....whatever he does, he still gets f***ed in the a**.... and the mouth.
Frickin Nikon/Canon lenses (un-rehoused) are useless for cine work, unless the subject is static.
Besides, 90 percent of you regular posters aint even workin looking at the number of thread replies or posts.
Talk about bite the hand that feeds.
Most of you guys are just whining wanabee amateurs, that cant shoot for shit..
"oh and heres some other piece of s**t i have uploaded".......

I hope Jim closes this forum, or at least vets entry to owner only status.

What number is your camera?

Can we maybe ban this guy from starting new threads? Here's another he started that's equally obnoxious... http://www.reduser.net/forum/showpost.php?p=199739&postcount=1

I think we [or only me] are missing something else?

Is Scarlet 8 bit? 10 bit? 12 bit?

I doubt that it'd be 8, but this is far from being unimportant.

Anyone know?

For shooting a feature, one could make do with a fixed lens just fine. I believe the main reason many were hoping for interchangeable lenses is to achieve the 35mm DoF look. 35mm adapters are a pain.

Is it possible for Scarlet to have a 35mm sensor instead of a 2/3" sensor to help us achieve 35mm DoF, but still have the auto features required by consumers? Probably not, or the RED team would have gone that route. But, it is still a year from release, so who knows.

It's a $3000 camera you can't get a DSLR with a 35mm sensor for that price.

I would hope if we can't change Jim's mind about interchangeable lens then we would please at least get a focus and iris ring on the fixed lens! Please Jim!

That sounds absolutely perfect to me.

Iris, Focus, and Zoom all on the fixed lens...the only problem is when you add the mattebox. Is there a way to get around that Jim?

Not to nitpick (and I don't really need 35mm DOF on my Scarlet for what I'm doing), but you can get a 35mm DSLR for under $3 grand. B&H has the Canon 5D, full-frame sensor, for about $2,200. It's the camera I shoot with the most right now. Of course that's body only, no lens. You could still get the cheap kit lens on it for under $3 grand.

I'm sure you can get some very nice DOF with a 2/3 sensor, at least enough to make a very good and marketable production. When I'm watching professional movies I'm not seeing the super shallow DOF that many people here keep screaming for. Just because a camera has a 35mm platform doesn't mean they're completing blurring out the background all the time. Usually they keep a reasonably deep DOF so you keep your focus on the subject but don't get funky bokeh in the background.

And since DOF is also a function of distance, you can keep your subjects a little further from any backgrounds and get an added sense of shallow DOF. Ya just gotta be smart about it and work with it, but a 2/3 sensor at 3K resolution properly planned and shot should be fine for 95%+ of any marketable 'mainstream' production. I say mainstream because if you're going for the funky super shallow DOF for any significant amount of time, it's gonna be weird.

agreed.
