There was once a program on TV... the Learning Channel, I think, that showed how throughout history it often was the little things that led to the events we recognize as world-changing.

Not being too technical, I have been trying to imagine how RED NAB 2008 mattered. At first I thought it was the two new cameras, but then I read the REDRAY thread.

If I understand correctly, you can now put a 4K movie theatre at just about any latitude and longitude on the globe, inexpensively... and even in space if you can get there.

Forget Google, youtube, MySpace... They depend on an internet connection to matter and thus can even be silenced. RED may be on the verge of re-inventing neighborhoods where one actually knows and enjoys their neighbors through a neighborhood movie co-op or something.

This in turn might make us a less isolated, friendlier, happier people world-wide.

A stretch? Maybe. We'll see.

I thought going to any old theatre made you less isolated. But your idea of a neighborhood theatre is something that sticks in my mind. I'm going to be thinking about it for a long time.

I'm from California . Im currently taking up an immersion film course at the International Academy of Film and Television. What took me all the way to cebu was my genuine interest in filmmaking and since i visited the city in the summer of 2004, I've always wanted to get back for a longer stay. The training here is completely hands we work on professional sound stages, use state-of-the art High Definition filmmaking equipment, and make really tough creative and technical decisions. We basically eat, breathe and sleep filmmaking. Here are some snapshots of our sessions.

TV has isolated us though, my favourite tv watching experience is when one can share what you are viewing. A cinema on every street could change things. Now we got to make the content worth watching.

People have happily enjoyed 1080p or less film projection for 100 years.

This holds no water and here is why:

Around the world people already watch movies in their neighborhoods on ratty old white sheets and LCD projectors projecting pirated VCDs and DVDs.

4K Projection got marginally cheaper. Yay we can serve a $100,000 projector from a [unknown price] box... even though we could already do that with Cineform from a reasonably priced PC. Whatever.

The tech announced is cool and all but it's a long international flight in economy from earth changing. Sorry but it all sounds very "let them eat cake" to me.

Content is king. Most indie content is unwatchable. I can already watch it all in 1080p on a projector if I so desire. The world still seems to be in the same place.

The other side of the coin from your point of view, and duly noted. I just threw it out there for people to consider as a possibility. Someone with vision may see solutions to what you perceive as negatives. 'S all I'm sayin'. That's how things get changed.

Yeah, I agree. Here in the states going to movies has lost much of its enjoyment because of people talking on their cell phone, talking to the person next to them... just generally not being respectful of others in the audience. I'm simply thinking that people in a neighborhood co-op would be more likely to act appropriately, since they were neighbors.

Doubly agree on the content and can foresee many old titles being re-released for this kind of watching. Sort of like an old-time drive-in movie that was popular in the States during the 50s and 60s and even into the 70s. There are some places that are reopening those monstrosities and doing a booming business. People want to enjoy the experience.

I do love going to the cinema or a festival in America compared to ones in England because the audience reacts very vocally. Feels like alot more of a social event. Then again, mobile phones don't even come into this. I hope RED works on some kind of repulsor beam technology thatimmediately strips people off their phones as they enter the auditorium :angry03:

I like opening nights, hecklers and all. But after going to the theater in Christchurch I may neve rlook at a theater the same again.

It was like a giant living room. With carpet!

REDRAY sounds like the easy part. It's the 4k projector / display that makes this idea difficult. There are plenty of computers that can process 4k motion picture data, but there are very few ways of projecting it.

Sony is at the forefront of 4k projection. They are one of the largest hardware companies in the world, and even for them, it is a slow and expensive process designing the projectors / displays.

Unless Red has access to some sort of magic future technology that nobody else has access to, this idea seems a ways off.
