Do you really think Sony, Canon, Panasonic, etc are going "compete" with Scarlet? They aren't. They are going to screw with Jim's supply chain instead. They are going to figure out what fab is making the sensors and try to influence their capacity. They are going to find out who does the opticals and influence pricing there. Then they are going to go after the electronics and see who they can get to blow delivery schedules for key milestones.

Yep, this is all just "business" for the Japanese "mega corporations". I bet Jim will have some VERY interesting production stories by the time this thing ships.....

I really hope you're wrong ... it would be silly of them to do so.

The backlash .... I think they're smarter than that.
I'd like to see them get off their corporate asses and compete.

Hell, they've got some really smart people in R&D that really must be wondering when their ideas are going to be put into commercial production.
The execs in the boardrooms need a swift boot right up the khyber pass, I say.

How big is Reds advertising campaign do you think? I have never seen an ad... That alone is enough to give Sony and the the others the upper hand. Although if Scarlet is as good as we think it is, word of mouth should be enough to cut into their sales...

Red has yet to meet their current demand so they have no need to advertise at present. Maybe they put banners on Reduser...

If it's a given then I have no doubt Jim will have prepped for it.

Yeah I was reading AC the other day and it hit me that the only RED advert that I have ever seen in the Mag is from a rental house. I guess RED do not need to as word of mouth among Pro's and the internet in general gives more targeted and detailed info on there products. And it's free to boot. At the end of the day working DP's and cameramen are a small crowd.

Actually, it probably costs them thousands of dollars a month in staff time to run this forum.

It's probably still a lot cheaper than magazine ads, and he knows immediately what people are going to buy and what they won't.

He probably could have gotten all the attention he needed from NAB and the interest from Peter Jackson.

Kraemer, if it is standard practice, how was he able to get RED ONE out the door? From what I've seen, if anything it's had far fewer problems than other camera projects of comparable magnitude, and what problems that existed were addressed very fast.

That doesn't sound like a company impacted by sabotage by Sony or anyone else.

Unless they are simply too incompetent to do it?

That must be it. :-).

D

This is standard practice in the industry.

Well, they at least would have to do it secretly, because there are laws.

There would also be, I hope, customer backlash if specific news of such practices ever came to light.

I honestly don't know if there will be a lot of competition. Let's take the iPhone as an example. It's been a year, and still nothing that even remotely competes with it. Why? The big boys really don't see the need to compete. There are always going to be loyalists. There are also going to be many who will not trust RED cameras, as they are not overly mass produced. Even in film schools, you'd be amazed to find how many students haven't even heard of the RED One yet. I think RED will sell a lot of the Scarlett, but a majority of the buyers will be professionals, and not the students/soccer moms that make up such a large part of the "prosumer" market now. It's not that unheard of these days to have someone buying an HVX to make their home movies because some guy at an electronics store counter said it was cooler than the others.

I had never even heard of the Canon XL series until I really started looking into pro cameras...and it took me months of research before I came across the RED ONE. So I think Scarlets will probably number between 10,000-20,000
when they go on sale, unless RED pumps out some advertising in places like Best Buy and sticks them on shelves.

After years of having heard about them - I had the unfortunate experience of having to operate one.
One of the most oddly balanced cams I have ever encountered.

edit: and after seeing the new Ex3 - well, I hope I never have to go there either.

Interesting point - still hasn't worked for them so far :matrix:

As has been pointed out competition laws exist in all major territories so Sony, Panasonic etc could never pull off what your suggesting. Secondly Thomson successfully had the EC block Sony & other Japanease companies delivering cameras into Europe through anti-dumping laws which back fired on Thomson.
Their appears to be among some Red users a hatred on Sony or Panasonic as if these companies are anti consumer or offer inferior products, take a look around your homes and count up how many Far Eastern products you have (include Red One in that) There is room in this world for many products and many manufacturers, what Red has acheived is remarkable but if idiots paint everyone else as inferior then they do so at their peril. By example Apple has done a great job with i-phone for the US, but in Europe it will level off because its not yet 3G and to be fair Nokia for example make great alternative products. If you only want one manufacturer in each section of your life watch the cost of your living soar and before making comments like this think carefully first.

Direct competition with Canon/Sony/Matsushita won't occur, unless Scarlet makes its way to retail. So far, Red seems to be operating on a web-based direct-from-manufacturer chain. This step alone will keep the price of Red products lower than any of these other companies can achieve.

My expectation is that demand for Scarlet will exceed its supply when it first arrives, just like for the Red One. I expect it won't be until mid-2010 that you'll be able to order a Scarlet and get a 3-6 week delivery notice the next day.

The Japanese might even send one of their flying saucers next week and take everybody from Red and Co. with them to another galaxy. That way they won’t even have to worry about any cameras reaching us at any point. Luckily Jim Jannard wont’t be taken, he wasn’t in his office at the moment, thanks God! Like all the billionaires in the movies he has a secret weapon: a flying saucer of his own, painted red by the way. He takes that beautiful baby across the stars and goes and fights the Japanese on their own turf. After an exhausting battle he WINS and brings everybody back to earth! And a year later people around the globe are filled with joy when they hold their new Scarlets in their hands.
