  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Soccer mom subforum?

um what? Are you implying that the only people using Scarlet will be soccer moms? As a professional filmmaker planning to get a scarlet I am a bit offended.

Casey, don't be offended. :)

Just because wealthy soccer moms will buy them (and they will!) doesn't mean they aren't professional gear. Just because people buy Hummers to take their kids to practice doesn't mean a Hummer isn't capable of serious off-roading.

That term was mentioned my Ted in one of the NAB2008 Youtube interviews. The amazing thing is that in a year, soccer moms could be shooting 3K Redcode!

hey, what about Soccer dads??
I photograph my sons soccer games and
then post a flash slideshow like
30 min later and the Soccer moms think
it is magic.....

Let's see next year if I can crank out
the 60 min game in 6 min and
stream it 1080p......

Bruce,

Have you made up your mind about scarlet? Will you be getting one?

Cheers

We'll have to get a MILF subforum going. Seriously though, I think Scarlet is a perfect direction for RED to take. I'm glad Jim Jannard doesn't think like his peers in the CEO world. However, I don't actually think soccer moms are going to use it let alone ever know about it unless they see some gadget laden father of a team member carting one about and getting footage. A consumerish RED camcorder would be awesome (not something I'm asking for since I intend to get Scarlet) and I think in two years, the market might be ripe for one.

Not to nit pick an analogy, but as I understand it the H2 and H3 aren't capable of serious off-roading as they are basically run of the mill GM SUVs w/different sheet metal. The old H1, on the other hand, is capable of serious off-roading as it is basically a military vehicle repurposed for the civilian world.

With that being said, I doubt we'll see a plethora of Scarlet's on the youth sports fields of America. A properly outfitted Scarlet is going to cost more than $3k and the post workflow is a little steep for weekend users.

From the Dictators 4 Democracy thread:

I noticed Teds new jacket ... Spiffy..."Its fun to shake things up" he says ...

Ted - Just wait untill the Soccer Moms get on board! ... An idea for next years attire - "Red-Togas" ... Zip up the tent and let the games begin!

The passion and enthusiasm generated by this incredible Team, its Leader, and their hard work to bring a Revolutionary Vision to us, The People, far exceeds all expectation above and beyond the wildest of speculations, and most importantly;

It over shadows all the negativity spewed upon it by misanthropic mumblers whos only joy is to piss on our parade.

I don't think soccer moms will be correcting their footage with RedCine and cutting it together in FCP. But you never know. The format and workflow will hinder/discourage the amateurs out there. Of course they could always work with the QuickTime wrapped files and cut those...hmmm.

I know it's not exactly the same, but I do seem to remember some soccer moms buying FX1's when those came out. There is a market for higher end home video for those who have the money and give a crap.

Don't forget, they are giving Scarlet full auto controls, and if you want to watch your fancy new home movies, just buy a Red Ray. I also think I heard Ted say in an interview that they are developing some new software for processing Scarlet's footage. Well, he didn't exactly say that, but he hesitated in saying that you'd use Red Cine for it, and thus I inferred they might be developing a more idiot proof version of their software possibly with preloaded looks? Just a guess. If you're releasing a full auto capable semi affordable camera then novices had better be able to use it easily without flooding a company with questions about things that the pros consider simple operations.

A Scarlet and Red Ray in every home? Is this what they're thinking? Probably not, but I'm sure they wouldn't turn down the sales either.
