  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet clues...

When I first got my Canon XL1, I used it as a movie camera and still camera. I loved to grab individual stills in progressive scan mode for my web sites. This was back in the day when DSLRs cost $15,000 and the XL1's picture was actually quite a bit better than, say, the Sony Mavicas of the day.

I could see doing this again with Scarlet. I'm in the market for both a replacement digital still and video camera (since both my XL1 and Canon EOS D30 are getting a bit old) but I doubt I can afford more than $5k or so for both. So I doubt that I could afford Scarlet without stretching myself beyond reasonable limits, but I have to say that intuitively I really like this concept.

I think that since Jim operates under few financial constraints, it's likely that his camera will be a marvel but still cost around $10k or so when a decent zoom is included. On the other hand, I notice he has not lifted a finger to quell the fervent expectations for a $3,500-$4,500 camera package, in which case I might just dig deep in my wallet and buy one. I have been, after all, planning to pick up a Nikon D300 with the 18-200 VR and one of those cheap Canon HD units, and that's about $3,500 right there.

If you going for the D300 get a better lens than the 18-200 or at least some others if you are doing paying work. I have the 18-200 VR lens, while good for general playing around it is not sharp enough for paying gigs. At least IMHO. I have a 12-24 and a 28-70 these are much sharper. I plan on getting an 80-200. I have a manual focus 300 and a Mirror 500...these are great for
sunset timelapse.

Is the RED ONE a still camera? I can grab incredible stills from the motion...

Whether or not a motion capture/movie camera can double as a still camera depends on the resolution necessary for your still image. And whether the shutter speed used for motion is compatible with the look of the still you need.

Jim

i think it's really interesting how many times jim has put forth the idea that cams like red one are simply still cams that happen to do 1-120 fps too. now combine that idea with the announcement of a pocket-sized professional camera. scarlet was never described as a "digital cinema" product to my knowledge. scarlet has always been the description of a dslr that also shoots multiple frame rates or at least that's what we inferred. anything less would be disappointing to me. anything more would just be too physically too big.

Scarlet is simply another part of Jim's master plan to get everyone shooting on Redcode RAW. It's going to allow people to shoot RAW on a much lower budget, including students and amateurs. Later they move up to Red ONE. ;)

huh? OCD much?

I really wish people stop using the term "motion capture camera" when it was clearly meant to be Motion Picture Camera. Lets stop mixing apples with oranges...

On another note:

If Jim says it will be a "new product category" - that could only mean still AND cine camera in one piece that DOES NOT compromise either capture mode... 10 MPx+ stills with 2K REDCODE RAW @ up to 120 fps - now that is a NEW PRODUCT CATEGORY!!!

Well, I'm an amateur and that's my plane, so you hit the nail on the head as far as I'm concerned

Jims song for his masterplan:
(sorry Mr. Cohen)

1) They sentenced me to twenty years of boredom
For trying to change the system from within
I'm coming now, I'm coming to reward them
First we take Las Vegas, then we take the world

2) I'm guided by a signal in the heavens
I'm guided by this birthmark on my skin
I'm guided by the beauty of our weapons
First we take Las Vegas, then we take the world

3) I'd really like to live beside you, baby
I love your body and your spirit and your clothes
But you see that line there moving through the station?
I told you, I told you, told you, I was one of those

4) Ah you loved me as a loser,
but now you're worried that I just might win
You know the way to stop me,
but you don't have the discipline
How many nights I prayed for this, to let my work begin
First we take Las Vegas, then we take the world

5) I don't like your fashion business, mister
And I don't like these drugs that keep you thin
I don't like what happened to my sister
First we take Las Vegas, then we take the world

I'd really like to live beside you, baby ...

6) And I thank you for those items that you sent me
The monkey and the plywood violin
I practiced every night, now I'm ready
First we take Las Vegas, then we take the world

I am guided ...

7) Ah remember me, I used to live for music
Remember me, I brought your groceries in
Well it's Father's Day and everybody's wounded
First we take Las Vegas, then we take the world

Under $10K?

Excuse me, but this thread is clearly here to discuss the ages of the people on this forum and then you come and start speculating? GOD! Just leave, no, no just leave!

Just kidding. I'm guessing around $4-6K (I Hope)

Less than $10K for sure..

Jim
