  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

PELENG 8mm Fisheye

I received shipping notification four days after I paid for the lens I ordered through eBay from East Wave. There was no tracking number; email said item mailed and should arrive in 14 to 18 days.

Good shooting and best regards,

Leo Ticheli
Director/Cinematographer

I got the same message. I purchased on 4/2 so that would mean sometime next week or so. I have no doubts that it will turn, we just need to be patient.

Guys,
Please once again:
1. If you bought the lens from eBay please address all inquiries to your seller
2. for all info about purchases from www.eastwave.ca please email to support@eastwave.ca
3. Please don't send any questions to ewp@sympatico.ca as this address is only for payment purposes. We receive a lot of payments every day there and can't answer to any questions from this address.

Also, please check your trash folders and antispam filters. There are many cases when messages get there and people are unaware they have got a shipping notification.

this was the first shoot I saw with the Peleng. Is this with the Peleng?

Mike Curtis's blog post

I have a Peleng on the way, just for my dslr / timelapse stuff for now.
I'd be very interested in a range of ND filters though.....

Colin, have you had any luck using this with your DLSR? Do you have a full-frame DLSR or crop?

I'm trying to find a fisheye for my DLSR timelapse stuff as well. Looking at the Peleng and possibly the EF 15mm fisheye, although I don't know if it's worth it to slap an EF fisheye onto an EF-S body. I already have the EF-S 10-22, so will the 15MM EF fisheye give me a much wider FOV than my 10-22?

hi Tom, I got the EF fit Peleng off ebay, but have not really shot much with it yet. I'm on a 350D and Canon 10-22 too....

The 15mm fisheye will not be that wide on the crop bodies for sure, probably like the 10-22 at 14 or so.....but I've never shot with it.

The Peleng is a different lens to the 10-22 at 10mm..... If you de-fish the Peleng it is more similar in look and coverage. I think for timelapse the issue is going to be finding a really nice foreground, with lots of interest close in, as the middle ground shrinks away fast with that much of a fisheye......

Thanks, Colin. I think will hold off on that fisheye for now. If I ever get a full frame body I will try a fisheye.

If you do find sample shots of the peleng on the 350D, that would be great if you could post one or two.

As I told earlier the Peleng lens was originally designed for classical film photo and movie cameras. The original movie frame has a 16:9 (1.78) ratio. The Peleng lens perfectly covers this size, even better than Nikon fishseye lenses. You'll never see black corners and the image is perfect in the whole frame.
Below picture is a good example I found from Doug Underdahl.
The white circle is a full image that Peleng takes. The rectangular frame is what you get with a standard movie camera.
RED in 4K has two formats - 16:9 and 2:1
With 2:1 the coverage will also be almost full but you may see very small (almost invisible) black corners on the sides due to a wider frame comparing to the 16:9.
Generally, you may use this lens in both formats without any problems.

EWP, not a flame, just a note: the original "movie frame" was the "silent gate" 1.37:1. The 16x9 (1.78:1) format is a compromise between the US theatrical standard (1.85:1) and the Euro standard (1.66:1) for the type of spherical photography that was most common in the 1990s. 16x9 was chosen specifically for HDTV, although the ATSC chose an anamorphic version for standard def as well.
Here's a pretty comprehensive list. "Academy" is halfway down.

But, staying on-topic, I think that it's great that the lens offers such a great classic fisheye look at a bragrain price.
What ever happened to the group buy? I thought we'd all be PM'd or something...
Cheers,
Harry

Thanks Harry, you're right. I wasn't sharp enough and missed a few keyworlds.
The original HD movie frame has a 16:9 (1.78) ratio.
Peleng won’t show the black corners of your 1.78 HD or 1.66 European as well as 1.85 frame like other brands.
Also, no problem for 35mm, Super and regular 16.

About the price. Unfortunately, the price won't be lower for the group.
The cost might be even higher in the nearest future. The reason for that is a currently soft US$ and strong Russian Ruble. The production depends on a Russian currency that becomes stronger every day in comparison with the US$.
