Hi All:

I am very confused as how I should do my post. I am an editor on FCP.
My client shot 2K at 23.98 and is determined on giving me 720x405 quicktimes at 23.98 with synced audio. My finish needs to be NTSC D1 720x486 at 29.97 (not letterboxed).

What should my workflow be? Should I cut everything at 720x405 at 23.98 and then do a "pulldown" by bringing it in a 29.97 timeline? Would I time stretch or would I use a plug in?

What would the ideal workflow be? Should I get the .r3d files and use red alert or red cine to get the 29.97? What happens to the audio then? It wasn't recorded to the camera.

Any ideas would help, I am as lost as Paris Hilton in the new York Library ;)

Thanks,

Gualex

My question is firstly, were is he getting the 720x405 Qt's from. The 4 QT formats RED generate in camera are no where near these dimensions.
If your just going to finish in NTSC, 720 x 405. You should use the 1024x512 RED QT's, set your FCP time line sequence settings to the dimensions you need to finish in. Drop the QT's in the time line, expand the image out or into the the desired framing you want. start cutting. DONE.

I just did a test then, works perfectly, Actually. Id drop the RED 1k QT's into the time line first, Let the time line auto set itself into it's native 1024x512.
Then go to your sequence settings, adjust the frame to your desired dimensions. It then crops the image exactly obviously losing the sides to fit the standard 4x3 NTSC framing.

You just have to hope that your client shot with 4x3 guide lines up as he shot so his essential action is within the frame he wants to master too.
You'll be able to do all this without any rendering until you master out off your timeline in ProRes (Hq) or what ever you output too.

With a 8 core machine at 720x405 (ntsc) It's almost real time.

hope this helps.

Also, FCP won't add 3:2 on putting a 24p clip in a 29.97fps timeline. It only adds pulldown when you play out to tape over DV, or if you have a card like a Kona which can add pulldown on playout. You can do it as a render process, for which I sell a plugin though:http://www.nattress.com/Products/standardsconversion/GFilmConvert.htm

Graeme,
Good to know your plug-in business is alive and well! Wondered if RED kept you locked-up in the bat cave somewhere.

"When might we see a RED edition of your plugins!?"

Ah, now there's a good question!

And on what platform/application will they run?

Like plugins that make RED do 24p? You've got to be kidding me! :-) Or fix chroma sampling? Not needed here!

Hi Big T

thanks for you email, I guess they are doing it thru red alert or red cine, I managed to go to tape from my 23.98 timeline to a NTSC Digibeta 29.97 so I guess my blackmagic card is doing the pulldown. But as far as the 720x405 I get a letterbox. I have a power PC mac so I don't think I could handle 1K to work with.

Thanks again,

Gualex
