  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

We are currently on a feature film staring Michael Douglas, using The new HyperDrive COLORSPACE O, which is the world's Fastest Memory Card Backup system.

I've seen that claim from HyperDrive before - it doesn't seem that fast. I'm fairly sure that once we launch SolidStore they won't be able to make that claim anymore.

1min per GB isn't that quick, IMHO.

1min per GB is hardly the fastest memory card backup option out there. In fact, that pretty much sucks.

My Lexar FW800 reader takes right about 4min to dump a full 8GB card to an eSATA RAID (all connected to a Macbook Pro). That's my current solution until something truly better comes along. And right now I'm limited by the speed of the CF card, not the reader or the RAID.

The Nexto CF backup system backup similiar to the Hyperdrive...but you can also directly hook the REDDRIVE to it (no PC/laptop required) and directly back up the REDDRIVE to the NEXTO as well.

I'm kinda leaning to having 2 Nexto's in my backup regime as well as a laptop as the third copy and viewer.

Just to completely hijach the thread, Pelican make these cases for CF cards,

Exactly. It's quite possibly the quickest of the stand-alone devices, but I guess that if the SolidStore can be classified in the same category, then it will lose that claim :)

However that product is targeted at stills photographers, where cards aren't usually as fast as RED's and where the amount of data is much lower - it's probably taken hours to fill up that 4GB CF, so a 4-minute download is nothing.

The Hyperdrive has proven to be a great tool for us on our shoot.
We are using on our feature with sometimes 6 cameras rolling at the same time.

It also has a built in 250GB Hard drive.

Michael,

Do you assign a single HyperDrive per camera? or does each "loader" get one of their own?

I've heard some good things about the product and will probably pick one up for way out in the field work. There was a post in the "footage" section from someone filming in Africa, and they used the hyperdrive to great success.

i have both the hyperdrive & Nexto ...
the hyperdrive is a one step copy & verify ...
the Nexto is a 2 step process - 1st press copy -when finished copying remove CF card - re-insert CF card, click verify ... if you hear the Nexto beep when it is finished copying and then procedd to step 2 = it is approx 15-20% faster then the hyperdrive ....
if you have a data person they'll know when the nexto is ready for step 2 ... if you do not have a data person then the hyperdrive will automatic copy & verify ..

You can save about $110 on the Hyperdrive if you buy the bare one and put in your own 250GB drive.

How hard is it to change the drives? Something you could do in the field? If so it wouldn't be a bad idea to carry a small Peli case with a spare drive in it (in an anti-static bag, of course).

Western Digital and Hitachi (and others probably) have 320GB 2.5" drives on the market now, and the pricing is pretty good.

both the hyperdrive & nexto are a little 'budget' on their assembly and probably should be stored in a pelican carry case.

In regards to the CF case holder http://www.carryitcases.com.au/prod31.htm
I'm still not sure this is the best solution....it okay but this pelican case has a credit card insert which takes the CF card in it's little plastic case, alas one side only...confused.... anyway I'm asking Pelican if I can buy inserts (x2) which means the case will take 2 CF cards which I don't mind...prefer this to losing a case with 10 CF cards in it. Or maybe the go is to get a small pelican case and get the inner foam laser cut for say 6 CF cards (with their little plastic case)

I would like to keep the CF cards in their little plastic case so I can red tape over (as exposed) until it's reused.

I feel neither the the hyperdrive/nexto is a great solution and hope the perfect backup device comes along.
additional backup battery devices are kinda bitsy and not simple with the with the Nexto. Nexto's nice as it'll read down stream usb devices....i.e. REDDRIVE.
Display on the nexto is 'just' adequate....not as good as the hyperdrive.

As soon a someone comes out with a backup devices that has a little lcd viewer that can read quicktime/red files and is built more robust...I'm on it.

Dave

Sadly the SolidStore is unlikely to have an LCD for image review... But hopefully would meet your other needs. I like to think it will be the perfect backup device, but then nothing is really perfect, is it?

But just for you, I will take a look at the feasibility of an LCD for shot visualisation again - biggest hurdle is lack of software/SDK tools for RED so far, so we don't really know what might be possible with our hardware when those tools are available.

This is my new baby.

The whole rack system comes in an 8U rack system with 19" LCD monitor/Keyboard combo, 4U rack computer with raid drives, Network switch, and UPS. Just plug into power and go.

Chris

and it transfers and 8 gig in 3.5 minutes.

It will transfer 8 gig cf to 3 independent drives with verification in about 13 minutes.

The Hyperdrive is slow to me, but I haven't quite figured out the best combo of settings to dump a card quickly with some verification. If others would be kind to share settings, that would be great. For example, what card setting are you using?

IMO anything other then FULL verify doesn't give me piece of mind ..
back in early Jan i've tried the short verify only to then hand the CF card to person on Mac and it wouldn't open in Red alert or red cine ..the Red had crashed in middle of shot so we were making sure data was OK .. putting the CF back into Nexto and doing a FULL verify it then popped up DATA ERRORS .. so since then only FULL verify ...
the hyperdrive 11 min & longer ( depends on number clips & size) ...
i use the nexto more - usually find it takes 8 1/2 min -9min .. using 5400rpm 160gig seagate drives in both units...
to date i only make the 1 backup SO FAR no data lost..
i only have 3 CF cards and the nexto just barely keeps up with run n gun ( the hyper drive can't keep up using 3 CF cards) ..

.

The odds of a drive failure are usually pretty low (although actually more likely with a new drive than one that's been going a while) - but if it does happen (or if someone loses/drops/formats it) then you're up a creek without a paddle.

That said, even I've been working on small jobs with only a single backup (that will all change soon when I get my SolidStore prototypes rolling) - I tend to feel a little dirty when I do it, but no massive failures yet.
