Okay, so I own the Blackmagic HDLink and my big disappointment is that it only uses about 1/3 of the pixels of my 23" Cinema Display. Will the AJA HD-SDI to DVI box scale? One description of the product seemed to indicate it would.
Here is the product

Does anyone have this and use it with Red? Will it upscale to the Apple 23" Cinema Display?

This doesn't make sense to me Shawn. The HD-Link is designed to display your image pixel for pixel. So if you have a 720P image you will get a small window but if you're cutting 1920x1080 you should be seeing about 90% coverage on a 23" cinema display unless you're output setting are wrong.

You are correct, but you can't get 1080p out of a Red...so using the HD-SDI out of Red it's a tiny 720p signal. I want the 720p signal using the full width of the monitor. Do you know if the AJA will upscale this for me?

Also Steve Sherrick quoted Graeme Nattress at:

Maybe to try out with the upconverters like the

Miranda QUC-801i/V/K cards

but I'm not sure it will work with a Mac hardware ?!

I think is always better to spent much less money for

Sony 26" BRAVIA® M series LCD Flat Panel HDTV

and have the big Sony LCD 720p picture for a presentation.

With this type of LCD you could have both previews available to switch on one monitor:

HDMI and HD-SDI (720p) video using BM converter.

Shawn - I have the AJA Hi5 SDI>HDMI convertor. It will upres through the AJA control panel. Not sure about what you're looking at but assume it will.

Shawn - for the love of God - wait until after NAB ...

You can get the Panasonic 17" HDSDI monitor for around $2600 or so, it looks great has all kinds of good features, and you don't have to screw around with converters and such.

Nick

Just checked, one on ebay new in box, buy it now for 2100

I would not recommend any upscaling stuff.

Out of RED preview HD-SDI you get with 16:9 ratio 1280x720 pixels.

Pixel per pixel or 1:1 you get on a different monitors with a different

pixel pitch a different size of the picture.

With a larger pixel pitch the pixels get bigger.

This is actually one of the problems with front panel (LCD/Plasma displays).

The discrete elements are larger and therefore more visible at even modest screen sizes.

Projection based technology masks this somewhat as the light provides a more natural scaling

of the pixels (than simply making them larger), arguably at the cost of some individual pixel

definition but this is not such a bad thing. This is why a film shown at the cinema may have only

2000 lines of (horizontal) resolution continues to look good,

there is no visible discrete pixel structure to the image.

So if you upscale from 720p to 1080p you get a pixelization effect

that is something like you could zoom/blow up a picture about 150% in Photoshop, etc...

As you know with that upscaling you can just loose a quality of HD-SDI preview that is 1:1 720p.

As Stuart English wrote before you don't get bigger than 720p from RED.

So if you get a bigger plasma LCD then you can enjoy a bigger preview presentation picture.

Oh guys...this man knows something! And it wouldn't be surprise for me.
Shawn, wait until after NAB...if Offhollywood (Mark) said so... :-)

The BMD box will upscale SD but not 720p - that said, what's your goal in uprezzing the image? If it's purely for a bigger picture either set your monitor to 1280x720 or buy a cheaper monitor that maxes out at that res.

Or am I missing something?

I'd like have 1920 x 1200 monitor and display the HD720 preview full screen using a AJA HDSDI to DVI convertor so the monitor can be a low cost computer display.
