Darius Khondji Color Grading On Set

Darius Khondji Color Grading On Set

This is very interesting. DPs have had to worry about what would happen to the color for so long that this must be a huge change. I remember reading an article where John Toll was griping about missing out on the grading because he was already off shooting another feature.

So was he grading on set in the evenings or whatever? What is the protocol for this? I imagine many directors would want to have their input as well.

I wonder if this will lead to more "On Set Colorists" as a job title?

Also, it seems to that even if you have a set "look" for a picture, each shot might require very different tweaks, since RAW has so much latitude.

So Tom,

After we called wrap, Darius and I would start our color grading session. Sometimes we would do our color grading it over dinner, Lunch. Sometimes even on set.

Most importantly he would always have immediate feedback.

We had a blast, I remember he color graded some of his own personal looks, which absolutely blew me away. He toke some of his image which we had shot a day before, which I thought looked truly amazing and then after his color grading he created a new look which I could honestly only describe as genius. I have never seen anything like it.

Thanks

Very interesting development indeed.

I think it would be great if the results of such on set grading sessions could be baked right into the r3d file (as the original or an additional metadata profile) in order to be used as a starting point for post production grading.

Canon CR2 RAW files, for example, can associate an XML file that records the RAW processing steps for an individual frame. That is not "burn in", but then again, I don't think you want anything actually burned in. You would want to retain the full flexibility of the RAW frames, but perhaps have an associated file or reference with the RAW file that could actually be reveresed with no loss if need be.

Exactly. I'm only talking metadata here. The R3D already contains a bunch of metadata which come from the preview settings in the camera. Now REDCINE/REDAlert should have a functionality to either replace this data or add additional (named) profiles which could be restored later in the grading session.

Just an idea...

RED Hand Held Handels

RED Hand Held Handels

What handles are on the camera in the photos with Darius? Thanks.

The Handles are from:
BMH or also know as Blue Modular Handle systems, they are also the manufactures of the Tango Head

http://www.TangoHead.com.

These fit all professional film and video cameras by attaching to either their 19mm or 15mm rods, while it can also be mounted directly to Arriflex Cameras by way of their rosette wheel attachment points. The device's modular design also allows the operator to keep the right and/or left handle on camera at all times, on shoulder or on tripod.

They offer better support and more flexibility.

Was Red also used for the behind the scenes videos? If not, what were those shot on?
Thanks

The behind the scene, were shot on the following camera's

Panasonic HVX200
Sony CineAlta F900R
Canon HV30

All great camera's.

It might be hard to shoot run and gun with the red, maybe Scarlet will be smaller and more run and gun style.

Saw the Old Navy spot tonight on NBC during 30 Rock. It was amazing HOW MUCH BETTER looking it was over any of the other spots I saw tonight, and any of the shows. Much sharper, no artifacts, and no grain. It really was night and day differences. The only thing that came close to it was one grass spot that looked like it was all 3d animation.

Michael, you listed the FF-5 in this kit list. I have been having a discussion in another thread about the FF-5, some told me to go for the FF-4 instead. How did you find the FF-5? Some say it doesn't fit below some cine primes. I hear also the ratio is different?

What is your opinion on this?

Hello 4K hub,
We have used both systems on our shoot. This is what we found on the pro & cons of using FF-5.

FF-5 Pro's:
1) Lighter & Lower Profile.
2) Clamp-on design, great for quick snap-on, snap-off applications.
3) Snap-on adapter for 15 or 19mm rods.
4) FF-5 is compatible with all FF-4 Follow Focus accessories.

FF-5 Con's:
1) The FF-5 was mostly designed for Video lenses
2) The FF-5's was designed for smaller diameter lenses so the locking lever does not full lock on the larger diameter lenses.

Bottom line both FF-4 & FF-5 are great tools for production uses.
Which tools are better for you, well it depends on what kind of lenses you are using. On our application it was more important to have quick quick snap-on, snap-off flexibility.

Enjoy more pictures of Darius & RED.

Thanks
