We recently, had an amazing opportunity to work with Darius Khondji the cinematographer of such remarkably movies such as:
Se7en,
Evita,
City of Lost Children,
The Beach,
Alien Resurrection,
Just to name a few of his achievements.

We did a series of commercials for OLD NAVY in Buenos Aires with Darius. He created some amazing images using the Red SEE LINK.

His over all feeling on the RED:
"This new digital technology is sensational to work with Surprisingly, it reacts closer to film."
"The workflow, along with the immediate response, makes the process of filmmaking more responsive and for most cases faster."

On our shoot we used the following:

2 x RED Camera's #75 & #281 (Build 13)
2 x Arri 19mm Sliding Dove Tail Base Plate
2 x Full RED Production Pack & Hand Held Support
2 x Angenieux Optimo 24-290 T2.8
1 x Full Set of Arri Master Primes 14, 16, 18, 21, 25, 27, 32, 35, 40, 50, 65, 75 & 100mm T1.3 (by far the best lenses I have ever seen)
2 x Full set of Arri Master Diopters: (+0.5, +1 and +2)
2 x MB20 4 x5 Mattebox
2 x MB14 6x6 Mattebox
2 x FF5 Follow Focus

Very cool. I'm really looking forward to seeing his latest work in Wong Kar-Wai's new picture My Blueberry Nights.

Tom, I would love for you to see Blueberry Nights and hear your thoughts. I saw it night before last at the Landmark (very good conditions) and thought it was completely stunning visually. Maybe not Wong Kar-Wai's absolute best film but it was very interesting to see Wong Kar-Wai's direction with his and Darius Khondji's collaboration after such amazing work with Chris Doyle in the past.

"My Blueberry Nights" has some of the best cinematography I've seen in the past year. Absolutely beautiful.

I always enjoyed the cinematography on City of Lost Children and Alien Ressurection! I'm happy he's enjoying the RED.

nice. very organic, love seeing someone with that look and it still looks "sexy" ..well...ok the talent helps, and locations but still...does not look like cheap video at all....i'm lovin it!

I really love these ads, I always laugh when I see them on TV.

The brief:

The old city seems to be empty except for a group of beautiful models. They wander around and engage in various leisure activities.

I not being sarcastic, I think it takes a certain kind of genius to come up with a concept like this.

Did DK shoot all of these or just 'neon nights'??

Thanks Michael!

Thanks Darius!

Amazing!

When RED has got in the hands of a great cinematographer...

So when can we "ask Darius Khondji anything"?

This pictures from our recent shoot in Buenos Aires Argentina.

He is truly an artist and helped me understand ways to express your self with images.
He also introduced me to the Master Primes, I use to shoot exclusively with the Cooke S4's and swore by them.
After working with the Master Primes and understanding how to tell stories in the shadows.
The Master Primes are now my lens of choice.

Thanks

Michael

pretty good but I guess I was expecting, WOW !

Darius should really get on here and talk about it. In the film world he is always doing several processes to the film, a "cocktail" if you will, while shooting, processing and even the final print of the film, I'd like to know if he had anything in mind when shooting Red.

Well Zak,
I spent several weeks with him on our shoot, he was mostly so excited about having the control of color grading his own shots. So he created a look in RED Cine and then we exported out a single frame to Photo Shop for even more overall control.

Thanks

This is very interesting. DPs have had to worry about what would happen to the color for so long that this must be a huge change. I remember reading an article where John Toll was griping about missing out on the grading because he was already off shooting another feature.

So was he grading on set in the evenings or whatever? What is the protocol for this? I imagine many directors would want to have their input as well.

I wonder if this will lead to more "On Set Colorists" as a job title?

Also, it seems to that even if you have a set "look" for a picture, each shot might require very different tweaks, since RAW has so much latitude.

Very interesting development indeed.

I think it would be great if the results of such on set grading sessions could be baked right into the r3d file (as the original or an additional metadata profile) in order to be used as a starting point for post production grading.
