  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Is there a technical reason why the slowest shutter speed available in varispeed mode - even when shooting at 1fps - is 1/24 sec ?

I would really love to be able to shoot at 4 frames per second with a 1/4sec exposure.

I believe it is possible to design a chip that requires a minimum refresh rate (Dynamic RAM is one example). but in the case of RED, I have no idea if it's hardware-limited or just a firmware thing.

...Or 2 frames per second at 1/2 second exposure and/or 1 f.p.s. at ~ 1 second exposure. We've just finishing a film here at our Museum that was (shot on an HVX200) that was half shot at 2 f.p.s. 350 degree shutter and step-printed out to real time. We have had very good reviews from all who have seen the work-in-progress thus far.

I very much hope these longer exposure times are implemented sooner rather than later. Very very important to us.

Here we go again!

Yes, its a restriction in the current firmware.

Stuart, feel free to smack me with a mallet, I can be obtuse.

So, this limitation is something that can be freed up in a later firmware release? Are there any hardware ceilings shutter speed-wise within varispeed that you know of? Thanks!

I've been posting here for what seems like ages but I have never seen a definitive answer regarding whether RED might be able to do 1/2sec or 1sec or 15sec exposures, etc.

These threads come up, some vague answers surface, then the threads get abandoned. :)

For the life of me. I have wanted a video camera that can shoot like a 35mm DSLR.

I gave up on asking about long exposure times. Everyone keeps telling me to just shoot with a DSLR.

RED... I am begging you!!! Ask not not what you can do for us but what we can do for with RED with long exposures times. A dream of mine.

Just asking. Can not wait to see what RED brings to NAB

Glad to hear that longer exposure times should be possible!

As usual, speaking as someone without any knowledge of exactly how Red's sensor works... engineering design always involves trade-offs of various kinds. Some of these trade-offs affect where the "sweet spot" of a sensor is, as far as total noise and dynamic range vs. exposure time. For any sensor, I would expect to see increased background noise as exposure times increase. Current DSLRs do a great job keeping that to a minimum. By contrast, with Red being designed from the ground up to permit motion pictures with high frame rates and relatively short exposures, I wouldn't expect it to do as well as a DSLR when set for long exposures.

Build 15 v2.2.1 update.

If you set SHUTTER to RELATIVE, then set it to 1/24th for 23.98 Project Frame Rate, and THEN go to VARISPEED, you can get as long as a "1 sec" exposure time for a 1 fps Varispeed record. In TimeLapse mode it still won't go longer than 1/24th - that is a firmware related issue.

Hey Greg, off topic, but any new productions in the works right now? I'm dying to see some of your Alaska stuff in HD. Have you thought about putting out a blu-ray? What resolution was most of your stuff acquired at? Varicam 720p? Film? F900?

Stuart, excellent! Thank you. I didn't understand that exposure times of up to 1 second were already possible. I don't know where I've been all of this time but I can't tell you how relieved I am to hear this.

Hello Tom,

I passed on a two year project that would have taking me around the world. It is all in super 16 and HD.

Our last projects were in super 16 and HDV and down the scale from that point. I do not have rights to the super 16 or HDV. All the DVCAM footage I do own. (not much use now) in the big world. I still am able to sell a few seconds here and there.

After my Alaska Up Close DVD, I sold all my gear and planned to go HD and solo. Everytime I opt to get back in, a new camera was announced. This has kept me in limbo.

I am so hungry to get back out and ger high quality HD footage of the places I have spent the last 20 years of my life here in Alaska.

RED would be so nice. I have all the Nikon lenes I need. Waiting to see what scarlet is all about.

It is just a matter of time. Alaska will always be here.

Tom,

do you have some of your stuff posted I can take a look at?

Thanks

Greg

No problem. This was new to Build 15. Now we need to add this to Timelapse mode.
