  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

What is this exactly, the 2:1 "windowed shooting" I have read about?

I thought the camera always shot 16:9 @ 2K 3K or 4K period.

Thanks, tried searching but came empty handed.

the sensor is 4k native so when you shoot 2k you get a cropped or windowed
version of the 4k sensor center cut.

Oh okay.. duh!:waaa:

I thought there was another set of settings I missed. 2K windowed is just 2K.

Thanks.

Read that wasn't sure about the "windowed" part....

Well, if you choose to record in the 2:1 aspect ratio, you are also cropping a bit off the top and bottom relative to the full 16:9 sensor. But I think that's normally called "reframing" or "cropping" or just "shooting 2:1 aspect" rather than "windowing".

So it has nothing to do with hard matting in-camera when shooting film?

Why would you want to crop more in-camera?

Yes, it's the same idea as a fixed 2:1 aspect frame matte in a film camera.

The Red One was released initially with only 2:1 aspect ratio recording enabled. Shooting 16:9 was enabled in a subsequent firmware update. However, currently, the "Red Alert" post tool, and the Quicktime codec do not work with 16:9 data, so this constrains some post workflows.

I'd guess once the post workflow issues are fixed, most people will choose to use the full 16:9 sensor.

Okay now I see why.

Thanks

The 16:9 restriction in QuickTime is only for 4K resolution recordings.

Recording 2:1 reduces the data rate a little bit, but more importantly it lets you record slightly higher maximum frame rates in varispeed.

Hummm..
