  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Top 3 Features - Wishlist

1. Workflow that WORKS!

2. Much lower noise in shadows.

OK, here's my three, but I've yet to have a proper play with ours, so I reserve the right to update our wishlist once I've done some serious shooting!

1) 1:1 Pixel Zoom (is that on everyone's list?!)
2) Less noise in lowlights/more DR (however you want to look at it)
3) Segmentable recording on RedDrive to allow different formats (4K, 3K, 2K, different ratios, etc) to be recorded on the same magazine. Swapping out all the time is fine on CF, but a pain on RD if you just want to quickly nail the odd overcranked shot.

Finner - we have SEVERAL workflows that WORK every day.

My clients have not seen one so I keep shooting film and HD.

I have not found one so camera #993 is still on order at red and I have not paid or taken delivery yet as it will just take up shelf space until we find a workflow.

Paying $75,000 for scratch is not an option.

I just want to give money to someone that has some kind of solutions. Cineform seems like the only company offering options and the door was slammed on them.

Hopefully NAB has something to offer post. For the love of all thats holy please Mark or someone offer up some reasonable options.

#1 - sorry your clients feel that way. they need to look closer.
#2 - we did not pay anywhere close to $75K for Scratch.
#3 - MAJOR projects have finished with Crimson (under $200) and REDCINE (free)
#4 - as far as what will be offered at NAB -

You really should get your camera ASAP so you can bond with it.

You will be playing "catch up" ....

Hi Off! How much did you pay for Scratch? If you don't mind me asking... I got in touch with them here in Paris and the range I heard of was 80k euros (125 000$)... Not anywhere close to 75k$ is really interesting... Or post the link! ;P

1)If future builds could knock a couple of pounds off the weight of the camera it would be greatly appreciated. Any plans?
2)Sleep mode. A must.
3)600mm & 1000mm Lens.

Hi Mark,

i have to confirm what Finner says.
#1 - sorry your clients feel that way. they need to look closer.
I wont teach a >50 years old top-decorated female avid (win) editor why all she knows about reel, tc etc doesnt work anymore. One has to assist such customers with technology and manpower, as the red post workflow is much to complicated and illogical right now. The windows workflow is very lacking as of now, many important tools (as QT wrappers, RA, a native redcode editiding) are still missing. The osx workflow has no redcode finishing. Linux workflow (flame/smoke/inferno/fire etc) is completly absent for redcode raw. >99% of all important 3hrd party VFX/CGI products (max, maya, xsi, combustion, nuke, fusion, ae) cant work with redcode raw (or only with the low-quality QT proxies).
No mark, with all respect, right now the red post-workflow is a selection of workarounds and compromises, and is -the- shortcoming in red offering right now. The sooner that stage is over, the better, but there is no denial about that. Dont forget: Very few pro houses use scratch, most top-end editing facilities anrent fcp - and these are the customers. for in-house, no prob. For larger project and "only" 35mm / hdcam "only" discreet / quantel / avid experienced people, the workflow right now is simply disfunctional. Red must get the support of 3hrd parties ASAP.

It is good that your workflow works for you. But accept that for -most- people the existing workflow -dont- work, are to slow, to much tanscodes, to many workarounds, to many dutch-tape extra apps, not enough crossplatform etc. I am looking at several $$$.$$$ worth of gear which cant access redcode here, not only $$.$$$. At least -we- do know how to outmaneuver the restrictions in place, but the customers sure dont. They want to rent a camera, not to re-organize their postproduction.
#2 - we did not pay anywhere close to $75K for Scratch.
So, do you have a very stripped down scratch or did you pay much less after negotiating the price down? listprice for an ok system with a scratch software is ~75.000, if you dont cripple it by not buying several modules.
#3 - MAJOR projects have finished with Crimson (under $200) and REDCINE (free)
fully possible. but no comparision to actual workflows with 35mm scans or hdcam (sr).
#4 - as far as what will be offered at NAB -
yep. especially the 4K full display, rt raw systems look excellent.

You really should get your camera ASAP so you can bond with it.

I dont think so.
Much of the gained knowhow on the first 50 cameras is fully obsolete, as example how to deal with the old mount.
once red doesnt prevent 3hrd party support for their camera lots of the workarounds and dutch-tape applications many folks have to use now are obsolete.

Hi Mark,

i have to confirm what Finner says.

With all all respect, I can, and have, offered clients of every shape and size a workflow "without compromise". We have, or are, working on RED films with budgets from $300K to over $100 million. So, I am not just making stuff up here.

And for the record, I 100% agree with Red's strategy of what they want to achieve prior to the "support" of 3rd parties.

Sorry to hear that. I'm happy to help your customers out - :sarcasm:

I have every module they offer ... and then some ... :matrix:

LOL!

I guess that's what will separate us from everyone else. All that obsolete information we have learned working with the cameras and media every day.

Lol, so true!

Btw to the other poster, I'm not so sure that all my knowledge of being in the first 50 is quite so obsolete.

fully possible. but no comparision to actual workflows with 35mm scans or hdcam (sr).

don't know what film scan or SR workflow you are working on - but I am pretty sure I can render faster than you can scan - and I KNOW I can "pull my selects" from "camera negative" faster - and SR - well ... I am RT in 2K without tape - love to hear about your "faster than RT SR workflow" -

Back on topic:
1: RED LOG applied before compression. (Should solve the noise, 3200K and sensitivity issues)
2: Customizable button assignments (I really want false color on button #1)
3: LUT uploads for looks in camera.

With all all respect, I can, and have, offered clients of every shape and size a workflow "without compromise".
ok marc, you dont get it.

the customers dont want to change their workflow, and they dont want being consulted, neither by you, neither by us, they simply want to use working solutions.

As they do with 16, s16, 35, hdcam (sr) and d5. They dont want to outsource, neither to you, neither to us. Especially if budgets are already allocated, they dont want or simply cant change their $.$$$.$$$-$$.$$$.$$$ post systems and workflow, which are mostly incompatible with red right now. They dont want external consulting, and they dont want to loose time with workarounds. And therefore, due to the shortcomings in red post, many of them stay with hdcam and 35.

I think you fail to understand that many, if not most, customers dont rotate around another camera, rental house or production partner.

We have, or are, working on RED films with budgets from $300K to over $100 million. So, I am not just making stuff up here.
We have seen 3 productions dropping red due to the red post, budgeted between the sums you mentioned. From 2 of them, we actually had got the go for the post - however we were completely booked out in the clients timeframe. 2 became 35mm jobs, the other hdcam.

And for the record, I 100% agree with Red's strategy of what they want to achieve prior to the "support" of 3rd parties.
Good for you. As you know many red owners are highly disappointed about the delays. And you know that for many reason many customers of red are having issues with the delayed workflows, from indie over midsize to large facility.

Sorry to hear that. I'm happy to help your customers out - :sarcasm:
I suppose that if you try a little bit harder, you could amuse them.

I have every module they offer ... and then some ... :matrix:
So, assimilate gave you a highly reduced price then. Good. Others payed quite a bit more than you, others almost nothing for their scratch systems.

The price of ~75.000 for a scratch is something many red customers dont want to pay, just in order to work with the red cameras output -without- wasting hours and days transcoding. Other prefer even more powerful systems and/or systems with more tools than scratch. These customers of red are still standing in the rain, and so are their customers. Kool aid wont help those people.

LOL!

I guess that's what will separate us from everyone else. All that obsolete information we have learned working with the cameras and media every day.

FYI we rented <50serial cameras for testing, before they were returned to all be exchanged.

I get it just fine.

My customers pay me to provide them working solutions. That's what I do.

I am happy to bid on ANY projects anywhere in the world, and prove I can provide a BETTER, FASTER, CHEAPER workflow than 35mm film - TODAY.

We've hijacked this thread enough. Happy to continue this silly dance in off topic if it makes you happy -

you fail to understand that this is not about "you against"... Its about the customers who use/want/insist on integrating red into their existing film/codex/sr basing pipelines.

Lets return to the topic marc, so short before the new 4K RT products hit the markets the discussion is obsoltet and i have the impression that you dont get my point anyhow.

better faster cheaper than lucasfilm or god? scnr.

I agree, i posted the same request to you basically in the same second, and if you want to continue the discussion then start a thread in offtopic - it would have been the better subforum to start lecturing finner about his wishes anyhow.

keep the wish lists coming guys.. its good to do every once in awhile... the lists have sure changed sine the last time we did this.

yep :) lots of progress since then and the camera already is great.
only the postproduction isolation hasnt changed..

1. 1:1 scaling on single tap. Doesn't have to be colors, just pixels.
2. Sleep. Could do it like laptops: Copy status to CF or disk
3. Exposure metering BEFORE preview metadata is implemented
4. Longer exposure times. Could well be limitless...
5. I think Evin is on to something. Apply RedLog to the data
6. Clean SDI tap, if one so wishes without both the EVF and LCD installed. It should be independent of the color settings on the evf/lcd
7. Adjustable "Focus overlay". As it is it works great under some conditions, really bad under other
8. Serious rethinking on the cables. As it is, they stick out from the body where they shouldn't, I foresee a good lot of broken contacts. All body connections should be small and angeled. This is the only place I think the design decissions went a bit too fast. I don't care that they're LOMOs, as long as they actually stand out and threaten to break my contacts.... The body is really built like a tank, but the cable-contacts by far nullifies that statement.
9. An easy way to choose to record to CF or disk (without removing the disk cable) OR a dummy CF to put into the slot.
9. Top rods should be included in the base production pack, even at a price... You really need them.
10. Rethink the dovetail lock... It doesn't lock enough.
11. Better screws and washers.

Workflow:
1. Send to Color from RC... (as long as Color doesn't support RAW)
2. A step by step tutorial on how to set up Qmaster for RL Renders.
3. A less tasking alternative to DPX workflow with the same quality.... :)
4. Buy FCS and rewrite QT Pro :) !!!

Sorta.
But this is just because you asked...
The cam is a killer!
