  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

As others have pointed out, the 5D is nice, but my fear about getting one now is that the next upgrade of this line is probably going to come out in the next year. The 5D has not been updated in something like 3 years, I think. It would suck to buy a 5D and have the 5D Mark II come out 2 months later. :(

I agree. I would probably stay away from a new 5D purchase, but on the other hand, its one camera thats been able to hold its own without an update for a long time. I'd get a 1D if I was in the market, but I don't need 22MP or 10 FPS right now, so I'm not running out to buy either or the 1D models.
 
5d has dust on the sensor problems. the next one will have dust prevention like the xsi, 40d, and mark.
 
my main purpose is to shoot stills for a indie film that i'm working now. i'm using a borrowed 40d now. it is good enough but the producer said that it is a prosumer level dslr and i should get a PROFESSIONAL ones just like the ones used in hollywood.

rather than dabating about canon vs nikon, do anyone have a inside info about what type or brand of dslr are being used on bigbuget movie stills. and what other equipmet or lens i must bring as a movie still photographer? thanks.
 
Like my self,

the most I have seen been used on set are FF Canon cameras, mostly the 1Ds series, but some time I came across people using the 1D series as well, I also seen a few times photographers using the 5D with Battery Grip.

I have to say that I have never seen any one using Nikon, but I did see more then ones the big A@$ Hasselblad H3D, a beast of a camera and super slow, but every need has a different camera to choose from.

My suggestion is to go with the Canon EOS 1Ds MK III, there is just no rival to this camera and Lenses options.

The combination most frequently seen on Movie sets are two 1Ds bodies, one with a EF 16-35mm f/2.8 USM (go with the MKII on this lens, way better then the MK I) and the other with a EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM.

I hope it's still within the scope of the discussion. What about Leica DSLR camera ? They got the best lens, and what about their camera ?
 
Leica does in deed produce great lenses, but as far as their cameras are far behind the curve, the new range finders M8 had a severe draw back upon release, now they seem to have corrected most of their issues.

When on important assignments, such as on set photographer, it is imperative to have gear that is well proven to that Industry, long ago Nikon was a supreme player, but unfortunately lost most of the business to Canon, as Canon superiority had gained most of the Photographers business, in both still and Cine applications.

Now Nikon has definitely put out a fantastic camera with the D3 but it might be too late to get the lost business back, they will get some back, but very little, as many like my self, now have tens of thousand invested in Canon glass and gear.

Also there are considerations for software applications, but mostly it comes down to Lenses options.

There are also other cameras that older photographers swear by, big bodies and a single pin hall lens with infinity focus, but none that I know use only one camera, a second back up body, with a different focal length lens on it is a must, no time to change lenses on set during the action of any scene.

Currently shooting a 400D (Canon) and learning with that. Will buy more glass as time goes on and in a year or so will then switch to the upper level cameras. I like the easy to use structure of the 400D. Nice little camera.

If RED has taken all your money either Nikon or Canon bodes well as with the right adapters you can then spend more cash on one set of glass that serves two cameras. Quids in all around.

I have owned the line of Canon DSLR's. XTi's with the UV filter removed, 1D's, 1Ds's, 1DsMk2, 1DsMk3, and the 5D. And Canon lenses. I have never been thrilled with the results. I know photoshop and printing. I have had work printed at Nash Editions with Mac. Conurus has converted my Zeiss Contax glass over to EOS. If I was starting new, I would go with a Nikon. Expensive, waiting list, and all, Nikon Digital Cameras look like photographs, not plastic representations of a photograph. Perhaps it is a difference of how color is interpreted. I don't know. I just like photos taken with a Nikon. Of course there is the large format Hassenblad, and the Plenoptic Cameras. But they cost a bundle and are too large for any spontaneous work. As with anything, choose your tool. The Leica's are OK, not great. You can put the same glass on a Nikon or Canon.

I have been doing movie still shoots for many years and would use my 1D Mk3 for this role, (in a blimp when necessary). The Nikon D3 would be as good a choice for sure. It all depends on which brand of lenses you want to own. You don't need a 1Ds Mk3 for this role - but- there would be no disadvantage to it other than initial cost.

One of my favorite cameras for movie still jobs was a Leica Digilux2, which I used on two films a few years ago. Great because it didn't need a blimp as it was completely silent and had an f2 zoom lens. But at only 5MP it's obsolete now on pro sets. Unfortunately, the new Leica M8 is not silent and the manual focus could be a challenge under low light conditions.

BTW: I have been a Nikon user for over 30 years, and switched to Canon a few years ago when Nikon fell off the map. Now that they are back in the game - it's better for all of us. I still have most of my Nikon lenses which I am hoping to use on the RED too!
 
Been said before but it is the EOS 1Ds Mark III for sure.

I have the Mark II and want to upgrade very soon.
 
i'm curious how you shoot that there would be such a dramatic difference. i think most people would be hard pressed to tell the difference between photos shot from either camera in "most" situations (without pixel peeping).

I agree. The best camera for the job is the one that gets the shot. It's a personal feeling as you get used to certain cameras they just feel good in your hands. The trick with stills is to have a fast reaction time to capture the images in focus and properly exposed and composed. It can be a Sony, Nikon, Canon, Olympus etc. Whatever works for you to get the job done.

There are many SCAM ARTIST, on the web, DO NOT, DO NOT by from any one that sales the camera priced for less then what is warted, IS A SCAM!!!


All I can do is advise you guys from not making a big mistake.

Ketch. I cannot vouch for that company at all! But I did see a number of companies selling the camera for around 6K, and some of them had pretty high "customer ratings" at yahoo shopping and froogle.

Maybe someone who knows more about this can find us the best price at a trusted store.
 
If it isn't obvious my vote is for the D3. Better DR and sensitivity than the 1Ds MIII, better wide angles, true full frame at 9-11FPS and about 85% of the useable resolution of the 1Ds MIII. And I do agree the color is more natural.
But you all know I'm biased.

But in all truth I'm truly impressed with the D3, great piece of gear, just a little too late for me, as Nikon lost my business many years back, and now is just no the time to go back.

The choice becomes simply a matter of preference and needs, as both cameras the D3 and the 1DS III are fantastic piece of gear.


Again as far as any vendor selling any gear way below manufacturer suggested retail, is a SCAM!!!


You will get the gear w/o charger or battery or grey market (no so bad) but nonetheless you will get SCREW!!!

I'm a member of several forums now and FM (Fred Miranda) and MM (ModelMayhem ) have very well respected PHotographers, which would love to save BIG on any purchase, but if a deal is too good to be true, well then it is just that! TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE!!!

My vote is for the 1Ds Mark III, but I'm a Canon guy. :-) I would look at the lens collections of Canon and Nikon to decide between the both companies. Bodies are coming and going but lenses stay a little bit longer. You can use the Canon EF lenses on your RED with the Birger Mount...

BTW, at DP review, I think they are saying the Mark III has a full stop more dynamic range than the Mark II. That's interesting since they are basically cramming more pixels into the same sized full-frame sensor. I guess it's a matter of image processing and general technological advancement?

Does anyone know how they achieved this, if in fact they did?
