This item up for auction is a Cooke 20-100 T3 zoom lens for a RED ONE digital cinema camera, or a 35mm movie camera. If you've just gotten a RED (or will get yours soon), you know how tight the lens market is -- PL lenses are very hard to come by, and the prices have skyrocketed. Here's your chance to get a quality, genuine Cooke zoom at an affordable price.

The Cooke 20-100 was the mainstay/staple zoom lens for 35mm movie production, up until it was replaced by the very similar Cooke 18-100 (which is still made and sold today, and carries a price tag of $42,500.) The 20-100 was used by Spielberg for the Tom Hanks 10-part miniseries "Band of Brothers" for HBO.

Like all true professional cinema lenses, this lens has a high-precision, long-throw focus ring with witness marks and cine-pitch focus gears, and shows little to no "breathing" at all. The T-stop stays stable throughout the zoom range. The glass looks absolutely excellent, and all functions are 100% operational; physically it works fine but there are obvious signs of normal wear for a lens of this age. While the lens could use a servicing (cinema lenses should occasionally be seen by a lens tech to re-grease them, etc) this lens is 100% functional, very sharp, and works perfectly with the Red One.

Also included with this lens is the mandatory rod support bracket, with an integrated zoom motor bracket. A lens this long and heavy needs to be supported by rods, but not all lenses include the necessary support bracket. This one does; the bracket is adjustable and fits the arri-standard 15mm cinema rod system. If using with a RED ONE, you'll need to order RED's Arri 15mm Base Plate and some 18" or 24" 15mm rods.

This auction includes the lens, support bracket, front and rear lens caps, and a custom-fit heavy-duty carrying case. (The plastic portion of the behind-the-lens filter holder is present, but apparently there's a thin metal insert that's for holding a gelatin filter that is supposed to be there as well; that insert is quite rare to find anymore, and this lens doesn't have it either.)

You probably don't need me to point out the obvious but, with hundreds and hundreds of new RED ONEs being shipped every month, the lens market is only going to get tighter and tighter. So bid now, bid early, and bid often!

US bidders only, please. As for shipping costs, this is not a lightweight item; the package weighs about 32 pounds and ships from zip code 28411. Because of the size of the package, UPS requires it to be valued at "dimensional weight" which is about 57 pounds. Item is sold in as-is, fully-working condition, ready to be put to use on your camera.

PM sent.

Hey, I found high speed internet here at Atlantis Paradise Island.

$10 per day but worth.

OK here is the scoop.

These lens are better than anything under $8,500 US Dollars.

I know I can't buy anything better myself for under $8,500 each, so I have to be careful or I will be lens-less too.

It was sad having a camera but no good glass, I had an 18-50 but no body want rented it.

So here is my price

20-100 = bids are $7,900 OBO - because a well known used lens website is selling a 20-100 for $7,900
25-250 = bids are $8,500 OBO - there was one 25-250 sold for $13,000 plus on ebay

All bid must be PM by April 10th 2008 1pm PST.

Inspections are in LA, and Orange County California only.

Thanks all.

Sorry to burst your bubble Tekcin but the 25-250 MII is worth $5500-$6000.
I just paid $5500 for mine from Isaia and Paul Duclos has one on his website for the same amount. Don't get me wrong, it's a great lens which is why I bought it but the market hasn't quite caught up with it yet. I'd rather see you you either keep that lens or sell it to someone who can use it instead of it siting in limbo.

Paul Duclos has one on his website for the same amount

I called Paul a week ago, I believe he sold that one for around 8K. Unless my ears plays tricks on me again.

He has nothing left.

The market will catch up soon.

3500 more RED cameras will be on the market in less than 12 months.
There will be three new major things to see at the RED booth at NAB 2008. That does not include the new 18-85mm RED zoom or the RED Prime lens working prototypes.

Hey Evin,

I remember your post that you got a steal.

Would you sell your for 6K?

Tek

P. S. See you at NAB?

I've already made the $500 difference in rentals, but then, that's why I bought it. If you can get $8k for it man, more power to ya, and best of luck.
I still say keep it it's a hell of an underrated lens.
Here's a frame grab to help sell yours.

That's also the same site that when I called about a 20-60 said it would probably go for $15k. That's absurd! In all the rental catalogs I've seen the 20-100 and 20-60 rent for the same price. Now the 14-70 that they have on their site for $15k rents for $400+ a day. They are trying to force the zoom market to match the prime market if they can. Too bad that the zoom market hasn't had the demand that the prime market has had.

A 20-100 that was in good condition just sold for $5400 on ebay, and another one is up to $5300 with 1 day left.

This seem like a good deal, Please go bid on this one first.

I have time and I am making money with mine any way.

Good luck all.

Tek

P. S. Everyone love primes lenses, but no one want to pay for an AC.

I try to go low budget and realized Primes is not practical. In 4K these zooms can look almost as good without the pain and prices.

Music Video guys love do fast zoom in and out, same as an action director I just worked with last week.

I do a lot of fast set up. Zoom is much cheaper. We save two hours a day in time because we do not change lenses.

A 20-100 that was in good condition just sold for $5400 on ebay, and another one is up to $5300 with 1 day left.

Compare for yourself, I do not state my opinions when it comes to conditions.

I wonder how many were made.

Evin,

Do you know?

Thnx

Tek

That is Barry Green's lens. As to how many were made, I don't know. It's anyone's guess but the majority are probably in India now. When the 18-100 came out quite a lot of those older but still working lenses were sold to the very vibrant and prolific Bollywood.
