Hello,

How about making a sort of lens mount that allows two lenses, then instructs the RED to record 2K for left lens and 2K for right lens: one frame left, one frame right 50 frames a second etc.. (since it can handle 4k) and then it could make a 3D output..
Either with polarised technology or green/red..

would be certainly future proof as more and more cinema is slowly heading that way. Soon our children will say
"what, 2D? boring"

Plus would be soo much cheaper and less heavy than two reds on a rig :)

Any thoughts?

You would lose the possibility to "play" with the inter-ocular distance (mostly called Base). Even if the best Base is 6.4 cm (2,5inch), when you shoot for children you go for 5,5 -6cm. Also for close-ups you go closer with the lenses. On the other side for pictures where you shoot ie mountains you go wider with the Base. But all this has to be done very carefully because a wider Base can give the Lilliput effect, and a narrow Base a Goliath effect on the picture.

I think you mean this ?

The problem on this device and other similar devices ( and it really works fine)
1. They are made for interlaced mode
You may can modify the elektronic that it run in 60 fps and sync to every frame. At the moment they sync to the blackburst or SDTV Genlock

2. They took every picture in sequemce
It work fine as long you have not too much movement otherwise you get too different pictures. It become worse if you have quick moves either in the picture or with the cam in the vertical. Horizontal moves " only shift the the deeps of the picture.

The best way always is to shoot with two cams even its more difficult.
The only problem for two cams is the base.
For far distance more than 5m you even can put two REDs on a rail.
For close takes eg inside the car or macro you need a special rick, at the moment mostly done with beamspitters.

The NAB HD3D Live transmission Demo is scheduled for 2pm on 4/14/08 at the NAB 3D theater.

We just did the 1st LIVE, via satellite 3DHD transmission in Burbank on Thursday 3/27/08. 3ality Digital is out in front and may be testing RED cameras soon.

I would encourage everyone to see the U2 3D movie from 3ality Digital, It's awesome!!

I have seen the future and it is 3D HD !

Why not using half-transparent mirrors? Mounted in L or Z shape?

I have seen such adapters, they were made for 35mm some 50 years ago. You might be able to find one if you look around.

Could you indicate me where I could find more info on those products? I couldn't find anything on your web-side. Also would I be very interested to understand how you resolved close-ups against wider shots using a fixed interoccular base? And yes what was the fixed base you use?
Thanks

Yeah, an over/under system would be what you'd want. Split the sensor area across, so you have two wide images for left & right.

I bought a surplus Paramount 3-D adapter (which they shipped to theaters, possibly for Jaws 3) to try to build such a thing. Haven't had time to even look at it carefully.
