  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Render Time Calculator

working in FCP , and then making render for last footage , 2-3 minutes.
Also rendering footahge for sfx team , for AE , Smoke , Flame.

But if some body want to rent a camera and ther take out all fotage for history :) (and dont want to install REDCINE on WIndows ) i need to now time , and charge it for this time .

Interesting thread folks. Just to repeat and make sure...the quicktime proxies are ready to edit in FCP from the moment you download the CF card to your HDD?
What is the current quality of the proxie?
FCP still needs to render this proxie for playback?

This is why NAB is mandatory for me this year.

cheers.

You can take the proxies that the RED Camera creates straight from CF Cards or REDDrives and plug those straight into FCP 6.0.2 without rendering with the proper RT Settings and quality settings based off of your particular machine. For example, my MacBook Pro 2.33ghz 15', 2gigs RAM, can edit the 1K proxies with RT Unlimited and Playback quality set to "Medium" not "High". If you have a newer 8 Core machine you might be able to get the full 2K Proxies to run without dropped frames assuming your disk speed is up to par as well.

The proxies are what they are as far as quality goes. They look pretty good but they are Proxies so they won't look as good as ProRes or ProRes HQ but they suffice for offline editing purposes.

You will not need to render the Proxies for playback in FCP if you follow the steps I mentioned above. When you are done with your offline edit you can use the Crimson Workflow to Conform/CC your high quality r3d files in REDCINE and create quicktime ProRes HQ to go back to FCP. You could also use Apples Color to do your secondary CC as well after you roundtrip back to FCP from REDCINE with the Crimson Utility.
Or,

If your finishing in SCRATCH you just create your EDL or XML from FCP and send to your SCRATCH suite for Conform/CC and Mastering from the original high quality r3d's.
It's really pretty simple once you do it. Hope that helps a little.

On NAB this year , we all waiting for more news from RED. :) and for 16 build.
:) Today i detect 1 problem with proxy . We shoot some thing but wen youplace proxy to fc its closed. and also i QT proxy look funny , half of screen is ok , and second is like crasy digital video , with color lines , i will pront screen it now.

Did you shoot in 16:9? Because if you did, this is still not supported by Quicktime or Red Alert. The only way you can look at 16:9 material is in Redcine or Scratch.

Ooooo , yes we did . We shoot 16:9 . I can not work with proxys if it is 16:9 ?

Correct. This has been mentioned in a number of threads here, and as far as I know is still the case, at least today. I had a client do the same thing just 2 days ago and they were rather distressed to learn that they couldn't use the proxy route and would have to take about 6 hours to convert their footage in order to use it. When I told them, they immediately said "but we looked at it in Redcine and it was fine."

With any constantly evolving technology one should never make assumptions. One should always ask and never assume.
