hello to everbody,

I´ve been attentive for a long time now in this forum, but I probably missed some thread. I was told that dpx files or qt files - output from redcine - miss depth in color for a good grading achievement. The colorist compares the red dpx or qt files with dv resolution cause of the heavy compression and he said the range for grading red footage is quite small. Is there any experience with professional grading tools out there? Better said: what is the statement of other colorists out there???:cold:

thanx

RED files will grade just great, with lots of room to play with, especially in their color gamut.

Could be how the files are treated in RedCine...

If you attempt to grade in RedCine and export with the wrong settings, you'll typically see problems in later stages.

If you export log files and treat RedCine as a onelight station, you should be rather well off.

Just my 2c

(1) A system that can understand Red's R3D files should have an easier time doing 2K "previews" out of 4K data for color grading viewing since wavelet decompression will allow to decode a 2K image without a full decode of 4K data. Such a system is helpful for real-time purposes.

(2) With the current digital projection system there are always some colors that are not common among the gamuts of film and digital projectors. Therefore, if color grading is for film, some colors are difficult to grade. The good news is that they are small in number.

DV? is he grading the qt wrappers 1/4 ??

We did a 2k conversion to dpx, no color settings in redcine/redline, graded over clipster, and made a filmout over a arri-laser. had enough headroom to play with the material, says the colorist. filmout looks really nice. some artefacts at underexposed raw footage in the blue channel, but was for testpurposes known underexposed to see the limit.

maybe relevant?

maybe relevant?

I exported a 10bit quicktime out of redcine that when I checked in Fusion was NOT 10bit.

The problem is either:

Fusion is not reading correctly.

Codec (avid) is truncating.

Redcine has bug.

At the moment I'm leaning towards Avid codec problem till I test more. However maybe Redcine is at fault.

Which flavour of AVID you are working with. If you use Avid Xpress Pro, I believe you cant get 10bit.
