  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Universal Mount: PL, Panavision, B4, Nikon, Leica-R, Leica-M, Zeiss-Contax, Canon ...

Is the Panavision mount patented? hasn't patent expired?

No idea about the patent. Thats why i asked. I was under the impression it was strictly a PV thing. Worth finding out before you spend any money on it though. Remember what happened with Chapman and the "Blue" PeeWees from another company.

Hi,

I have PV/PL/Nikon mounts for my Mitchell.

Stephen

Sanjin, great that you do the experiments.
Have you swapped the red mount for the UNI-Mount already?
That certainly requires a machine-shop-visit, doesnt it?

Laguun,

of course not.

And now in this case I'm not doing anything by myself.

I'll be in München/Ottobrunn on Thursday, March 27,

when the P+S Technik engineers can have a look at

RED and can do a precise technical measurement.

Then later in a week or two I am sending my RED with

Fedex to them in Ottobrunn for a final swap of the mounts

from RED PL mount to Interchangeable Mount System (IMS).

Also now I would not do any risk and swap RED mount by myself.

P+S Technik engineers and mechanics can also shim and collimate all what is needed.

Their service is very professional.

A full report to come here soon.

Also I am more conceptual experimentalist.

Not so brilliant like a mechanic.

I do not have appropriate machines.

Like a handwork I can assembly easily RED production pack

or my Cannondale "Bad Boy 650" bike.

Good to hear Sanjin!

I spoke with PS last week (we are also thinking about adapting one red to universal mount) and it can agree that they are indeed very professional.

I am -highly- interested in your results, i think the universal mount is an excellent idea! (will red odder one to? :))

Laguun,

I'm sure RED is closely watching what is going on here through this forum.

As we know IMS mount already exists on SI 2K cameras.

But SI 2K has 2/3" 16:9 high-dynamic range CMOS Imaging sensor

that does not make a big sense with 35mm sized lenses in terms of DoF.

Only 4K RED can benefit from mount like an IMS.

So if everything works well with IMS on RED I do not see any obstacles

that RED "one day could offer" IMS mount as an additional option to the RED ONE camera system.

Hi Stephen,

Did you source the Pv mount from Pv or another vendor?

S

Hi Stephen,

I bought it from Ken Stone, Fries Engineering were also offering them as standard off the shelf mounts for their Mitchell conversions. As they were often used as effects cameras often on motion control I doubt PV cared very much. Obviously the lenses were rented from PV.

Stephen

It'd be pretty damn messy interchanging between so many different lens systems all the time wouldn't it? Focus rings turning the wrong way and whatnot...

For example you have a project with a tight budget.

For the shots that need to show refocusing you rent a cine glass (Arri/Zeiss,

Cooke, RED lenses, Angenieux, Panavision, Hawk, etc...) to avoid the breathing.

For other "static-focus" shots you go Leica R and M primes that are one of

the best still lenses and also the focus rings turning the right way.

You just have to know what you want for each particular

shot in advance and to calculate what you need before.

Even you could fast change you mind on set with lenses and still remain comfortable.

That could be one of many versatile lens exchange option with IMS on RED.

Yes Sanjin, that could be a great possibility and versatile system...

Q: you've got to recollimate every time you switch?
(sorry if it was already asked :-)

I stay tuned for this, i'm really interested, i love P+S stuff!

cheers

P+S's web page for the IMS (http://www.pstechnik.de/en/optics-ims.php) lists "Ease-of-use change of lens mounts" and "No more adjustments necessary" as features of the system, so it doesn't sound like it.
But of course, Sanjin will find out for sure.

I don't see how this can work without a whole new front for the RED, which ain't gonna be cheap.

Nick

Thank you, Sanjin.

I have also asked many time on this forum if the IMS was possible. You are the pioneer here (together with P+S), and I appreciate your willingness to go the extra mile for the benefit of many.

There's only thing I could think of that would make it better...

...if Birger decided to make their intelligent Canon and Nikon mounts compatible with the IMS.

Stephen,

Funny that... can't see them being that keen. I would love to see their expression if you walked into Greenford and asked for some Primo's for your Red camera! :waaa:

Mike c

I suspect they would refuse to rent you a set. Primos are pretty hard to come by anyways, and they would simply say that you had to rent a PV camera to go with them.

Of course, I'm sure they'll have RED in their inventory before long. So then you'll have to rent a Panavised RED.

Thanks and Congrats Sanjin for this your thread! As usual...

Good luck!
