I would like to ask a favor from everyone going to NAB that I have had the pleasure of speaking with on the forums the past year or more.
Come up to me, say "hello" and spend some time talking.
My primary reason for attending this thing is to meet all of you, however there are some challenges here, and I will need your help:
I am mostly deaf.
By this I do not mean I cannot speak, or hear at all, but it does mean that if I cannot see your mouth, then I will not be able to understand what you are saying. Also, if the room is noisy, then understanding becomes even more of a challenge.
Some of you have spoken to me on the phone and from your perspective, it would seem there's no real problem, but what you don't know is that on my end, the phone I have stuck to my ear is so loud, that my neighbors across the hall must close their door to avoid hearing both sides of the conversation.
I'm rambleing.. Point is, I sometimes tend to "get quiet" in loud situations because it can be tough for people to communicate with me, and this tends to make me "crawl into a corner" rather than face the potential embarrassment of asking someone to repeat what they just said, over and over again.
I have been in situations like this before, and then they end and I realize I spent days on end at the event and spoke to.... No one.. And I try to figure out what happened!
This physcial challenge has been, without a doubt, the single largest issue in my success in this industry. However, I refuse to give up, less I lose doing something I truely love.
I plan to wear a shirt that will have my name very large on it and I hope to even post it online before NAB so you will know what to look for. But if you see me, please, tap me on the shoulder, get my attention, and take some time to say "hello".
I have so enjoyed speaking with so many of you on here, it would be a shame to miss the opportunity to do it in person. So I am asking for your assistance in doing me the honor of getting to know you all.
Sincerely
Jay
