Now with the HD-SDI enabled simultaneously it could be interesting to use one of the monitors on the market instead of the Red LCD. Has anybody tried something like Transvideo or Panasonic stuff yet? What are pros and cons like resolution, viewability?

The biggest, hugest "con" to using any HD-SDI monitor instead of the Red LCD is: you don't get the menus and graphs and all that stuff.

The Red camera displays show up in an "overscan" area at the top and bottom of the frame. That stuff doesn't show up on the HD-SDI output. The Red outputs a 1280x848 frame; the HD-SDI only gets the central 1280x720 out of that frame (so some stuff will show up, like the very topmost edge of the bottom menu, but not enough to make it useful).

However, the entire output does go out through the HDMI port (does it still do this in 15 with all ports active?) So if you want to use a monitor other than Red's, my advice (as an HD-SDI monitor owner) would be to go for an HDMI monitor instead. The Carrion is the only one that I know of right now that has the appropriate design, is a portable form factor, and has DVI(HDMI) input so it can show you all the menus and everything.

The drawback to Red's LCD is that it's Red-only; you couldn't use it with any other camera or deck or anything. That's the strength of a non-Red HD-SDI monitor, is that you can use it on everything else too. But if it's for use with the Red, the Red LCD's ability to show the menus etc. is a significant factor that you would be foolish to ignore.

I'll likely wear the Red LCD as well as one of my Panasonic LH-900 8.4" LCDs on the camera; the Red for the AC, the false color, and for menu access, and the Panasonic for framing, focus, and the "quick-and-dirty" REC 709 exposure check. Loop out of the 8.4" to video village.
Cheers,
Harry

The Panasonic 8.4" is the perfect monitor for the Red. No need to run the RedLCD for the AC. Panasonic's peaking and HD zoom functions are all they will need.

The cut-off menus are inconvenient, but not a deal-breaker. I find the AC just needs to run around to the back of the camera frequently to check that display.

I did not think about the menu at all I hve to admit. So thanks a lot for that hint again. I checked the Panasonic HD monitors and liked them very much. As for the other brand I will check on that, too. In every case thank you a lot for your valuable input.

As a very happy owner of the Panasonic BT-LH80W, I would say that yes there is some deal-breaking going on. You don't get the overexposure warnings, or the waveform, or the audio levels, or many pieces of information. And navigating the menus is comparatively painful, vs. how simple it is on the EVF/LCD/HDMI. I had hoped to contain costs but frankly the Red is much less usable without this info, so I put in my reservation for an EVF.

I do not recommend someone to try to operate the Red solely off HD-SDI. There's lots of info that you will never see. You really do have to have one of the three options: either the EVF, or the Red LCD, or an HDMI monitor. The HDMI monitor is the cheapest option; you can buy a $180 Dell 1708FP and use a $25 HDMI->DVI converter to use with it. But you gotta have this information. You can't even monitor audio without it.

I agree that the 8.4" is the perfect VIEWING monitor. But the Red LCD is so light, why not keep it onboard as well? Even if the AC wanted to share the 8.4" with the operator, the menu access on the Red LCD is convenient, and I actually like the false color display.
But to each his own...
Cheers,
Harry

what's the difference between the LH80, the LH80W, the LH80WP and the LH80WU??
and will they all work with the HD-SDI output of the RED?

I can't find anything on panasonic's site about this and the new 80WU on their site doesn't have a spec sheet.
