Sorry if this is old hat, but I can't seem to find an actual figure for the number of REDs delivered to paying customers. On Red.com there is a message saying "now serving 1,000 to 1250" but I'm not sure what that means.

I would have thought there would have been some sort of ceremony when #1,000 rolled down the slipway, but perhaps not.

Does anybody know what the RED/Genesis ratio currently is?

good point

well, i have no official numbers from panavision, but iirc there are less than 100 panavision genesis, less than 50 arri D20.

red one should easily have outsold -all- arris, -all- panavisions, -all- aatons 35mm production of 2007 and 2008 combined alone this jan/feb/mar.

Well, that's a little bit of a meaningless comparison, as both the Genesis and D-20 are rental only units that cannot be bought by 3rd parties.

But there's no doubt that Red have shifted more units in such a short space of time than anyone else has managed with equivalent level kit in the past...

How so meaningless? How many Reds are there, and how many Genesises?
Genesi? Genesen?:red_bandana:
What's hard about that?

If the RED turns out to be the "Genesis Killer", does that make it the Genecide?:gun:

:-)

Well, you have reservation #900, have you received yours yet?
If so what are you doing here instead of out in the fresh air shooting pictures:biggrin:

But yes, the RED would certainly have outsold "all Panavisions":usd:

It's a little bit of a meaningless comparison as your both talking about the Red "out-selling" Genesis and D-20 cameras. Neither of which it is possible to buy, so yes, of course they've outsold them!

If you want to compare the Red to Genesis/D-20 market, a better yardstick would be "how many days rental have been paid for on these systems?".

A better comparison for purchase figures would be the F-23 (at least, in a few months time it will be) and after that the F-35 and D-21, when they hit the streets. FWIW, I would fully expect the Red One to outsell all of the above, but then it's price point is considerably lower - you won't find indies buying F-35s...

Just my 0.02.

Last I checked, Red is not releasing the # of Reds they have actually shipped.

But it does beckon the question that at some point there should be a SE [Special Edition] RED ONE as a tribute. Maybe a 1 off Plantinum or Gold Plated RED that sits next to the early prototypes.

i am including 435, 235, 416 - all arri cameras, all aatons, especially penelope - and red has become the marketleader by far in the 35mm area.

red outsold arri, sony F23 and 35 combined.
actually, they are delivering more cameras a month than sony has orders for the F23 a year.

thats the point.
red offers better quality at lower price than its japanese competition.
i have bought sony hdcam for many years. hdcam is here to stay, and i wouldnt dare to swap our sonys for a red in live situations, but the marketleader for 35mm cinematography cameras in 2008 is not arri or sony, its red.

Do you know how many orders arri, Sony F23 and 35 have?
how many did RED sell?

Let us assume they sold 200.
So, we should be seeing 200 to 400 movies made on RED, in 2009, right?

Now, that RED is easily available, the Hollywood must be dumping their Arri 35 mm cameras, right?
That means, there should be a flood of used Arri 35 mm film cameras on the e-bay, right?

Do you at least know how many did RED sell?

Let's not. That's a bad guess IMHO.

So, we should be seeing 200 to 400 movies made on RED, in 2009, right?

You're assuming everyone is buying Red to make features from the get-go. What about TV shows, short films, music videos, commercials, EFP stuff, stock footage, internet virals, VFX shoots, etc, etc etc.

BTW, What's the ratio of film cameras out there to number of films shot per year?

Now, that RED is easily available, the Hollywood must be dumping their Arri 35 mm cameras, right?

No, doesn't relate.

Also, I think Red is somewhere in the 3000s as far as orders go. I don't think they have shipped 3000 cameras yet. So no, they are not easily available to buy.

I'm not even sure of what point you're trying to make this time, chuckt. That Red has only shipped a few cameras? (wrong, come to LA and see for yourself). That people are still using film? (of course, nobody here disputes that...)

Ah well...

Considering about 5000 movies get made per year I think it's fair to say 200-400 movies will get shot on RED in 2009. Probably more because the total number of movies worldwide will just go up moving forward.

But when you factor in Music Video, TV Commercials, Direct to DVD, direct to Digital, Cable Content... one helluvalotta stuff is going to be shot on RED and already is, even in it's current beta state.

Yeah... I'm pretty positive RED is going to out do Arri in total content created in pretty short order. Will Indiana Jones 5 get shot on RED? Who cares.

Panavision Genesis co designer just walked out my door about 3 mintues ago.
They have 70 Genesis cameras.
So yes under 100.

Bruce Allen,

seems you can't recognize sarcasm if it hit you right smack between the eyes.

Did he have anything to say about the RED? (Anything that can be published in a Family Forum like this one:)

But not the market leader for getting paying asses on Cinema seats, at least not yet. In case you haven't noticed the amount of actual RED footage that has made it into the public arena is microscopic. How about we let it actually happen before you starch your shorts too much?
